I am planning on taking a CELTA course from Apollo in July, so I will be looking for a job in August. I have a BA. Assuming I pass with an A or B, and assuming I am not hired by Apollo after the course, how long should I expect my job search to take in order to find a job at a reliable if not completely unshady school with at least 20/wk, assuming a wage of $15/hr min.?
Also, is $500/mo a reasonable living costs estimate. Living costs for the first months should only include the cost of accomocation for a small bedroom/bathroom or studio apartment that is clean and has a fan or air conditioning- no tv or any extras is required. It should also include the costs of eating at seemingly safe local restaurants or road stands 3 times a day. As well as, the cost of necessary public transportation in order to look for jobs. |

You are asking a too hard question.
$500/mo, with all the accommocation you required, you know, there is only place in Hanoi where you can have that kind of things: volunteer organization ($400-450/mo). I'm not advertising for my organization, but only in my organization, I saw an international volunteer joining in our activities and having teaching job in afternoon or evening.
About our CELTA course in Apollo, i'm sure that you will be hired after finishing the course, they always need foreigner teachers. About another teaching english job, there are many english centers in hanoi (sorry you don't give me which apollo you intend to take your course) where you can easily find a job. Wish you luck!

Where did you come up with the figure of $500 for the month? Have you already found accomidatons? I have heard this will be your biggest expense.
I am also taking the course in July. Are you going to be in HCMC? |

You'll probably be able to land a job or 2 before you even complete the course. Reliable and unshady is an entirely different issue but experience is the best teacher for that. For Hanoi $15/hr min. and Saigon $13/hr min. but with a CELTA you should be able to exceed that and with a little experience $20/hr and up.

No way! you can live on this but you'd have to be adventure driven. A grand a month is pretty comfortable but not heavily socialable.
hope that helps |

I assume some of the people that replied here thought you meant how much you wanted to earn per month. Cost of Living could be around $600. I think thats doable. Assuming you find a place for $10 a day ($300 for the month) and you still have $10 to spend on food and transport per day. You will have to eat at the non-western spots, but I think its 'doable.' I couldn't do it. I usually do the math and it sounds cheap. However, by the time I've lived somewhere for a month's time I've usually gone over budget. You're most likely to spend more in your first few months than at any other time IMHO. Thats when you know the least about the city, and have yet to find your personal cheap-spots.
Either way, good luck!! Let us know how much you end up spending for future people with your same question. |

If you are trying to go cheap, then you will most likely get sick from the food. It's almost inevitable, though once living in the area for a while your body will adapt. I would plan to spend more on food, stay healthy, and gradually mix in the local cuisine. |

Is it possible to survive in Hanoi on $600 dollars a month with accomodations?
I don't go out too much but I do like to go to a nice hotel to eat a buffet once or twice a month.
