Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had any recent information or comments about life in Fujairah. I've done many searches and it seems as though there are two camps: Horrible, polluted place with nothing to do or lovely quiet town with a nice community. Obviously the truth must lie somewhere between...
Is the pollution really bad? Can you compare it to a major city in Taiwan, for example? Any ideas on what a single could expect for housing (some say villas but I would expect an apt.)?
I can't find much about the work atmosphere at HCT at those colleges which I would think means that it's alright...anyone heard differently? I'm not expecting perfection by a long shot but it would also be useful to know if there are major issues going on.
Thank you! |

Work environment for the most part is pleasant - the downside is living in such a small town is that you tend to socialize with or be under the observation of most of your colleagues, some of whom delight in minding others' private business.
Colleges are better than most HCT locations in terms of supervision/management - so long as you do your job right, you will not be micro-managed or second guessed.
Outside, the blue umbrella beach (a public beach past the Hilton) tends to get very trashy when the weather is good because many people use it as a picnic area but the trash receptacles are few and far between - heaven forbid that one should take one's own trash home and dispose of it properly! Occasionally there will be globs of oil/crude on the sand or just under it because the tankers waiting to take on loads will clean out their bilges or there will be some "slight" spills.
They are busily dismantling the mountains and transferring them to the large construction sites in Dubai etc as foundation material. I have never really noticed them but there are those who find the dust etc. annoying and affecting breathing at times.
As a single, you will probably get an apartment although some do get villas, depends on what's available in the pool when you arrive. The apartments are very livable.
It is a quiet place, one move theatre which shows English language movies (they stay a week and then move on - only a few screens so the popular ones don't stay long). There is Lulu's and Choithrams for supermarkets - an adequate selection but for "exotic" western or European goods, a monthly or even less often trip to Dubai or Sharjah for Spinney's can get you access to non-perishable stuff you can't live without.
There really isn't a lot of "action" in Fujairah unless you make it yourself - there are those who have regular tennis matches, others do motorcycle drives through the mountains and deserts, and others who go camping or diving. It's what you make it. |

Thank helenl! I'm considering taking a job there and after reading endless old threads, it's nice to hear an up-to-date take on things. I completely agree that life is what you make it no matter where you are! By the same token, it's reassuring to hear that it seems like a decent place management-wise. |

4760 usd with a single furnished apartment.
Is the salary average for teaching in Fujairah?
Will my family be allowed to join me at a later date?
Does I have to buy a car? |

Sounds about average for a starting salary (especially EFL) at HCT. Fujairah is small enough you could probably walk most places, depends on where your accomodation is and the time of year (45C+ about 5 months of the year).
If it's HCT, the family question is moot. They bring everybody at the same time unless the employee chooses otherwise. |

I'd recommend a vehicle in Fujairah - you'll want to visit Dubai from time to time.
The area is very convenient to Oman, --- and a vehicle opens up some interesting opportunities for you.
Bring your snorkle and/or diving gear! Just a little bit north, you'll find some of the best under-water opportunities on the planet. |

You posted this elsewhere too. Come on, there isn't any anti-terrorist certificate. Move on, for heaven's sake...looks like a scam. |

An obvious scam...
You won't even make it to Fujairah to see if there are any dead monkeys... (but someone will have your money)

That's a bit of an overstatement. Ok, the diving in Dibba and Khor Fakhan is ok, but not nearly as good as further south, like in Muscat. In no way does it compare with what's available in Southeast Asia or the Seychelles. |
