Did anybody witness the terrible flood of Riyadh?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqi3NHm8BCw

The second video clip shows an attempt to rescue a Saudi woman from a car stuck in the flood!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xbfDKzZyds

I think it was not as disastrous as the flood of Jeddah of last year?
It seems Riyadh city, like Jeddah, lacks a good system of storm water drainage!

Uncle Scott, did you survive the Riyadh flood? Laughing

Pretty easy to survive a flood if you are not there!

It seems that none of the Gulf cities have a decent storm sewer system... which makes sense. They are very expensive and heavy rains are rather rare. But, with Global Climate Change, they seem to be getting more heavy rains... which may make upgrading the systems more cost effective.

Of course one of the problems is that everyone goes out to play in the rain in the Gulf and they try to drive through the deep water. In Arizona, they passed a law that if you drive through deep water - which has been signed - and have to be rescued, you have to pay for the helicopter that comes out to get you. It can cost thousands of dollars... it is called "The stupid driver" law. The police are pretty efficient at getting out and putting up the signs for the usual low spots that go under water in a major rain. People invariably ignore the signs and go through anyway... the law is aptly named.

Back to the Youtube video, LILWAPPERZ, if yer a college Applied Media student, then you've done yer teachers proud!

Secret Agent Man, this wuz not the worst storm that Riyadh has ever seen (fair, enuf, you didn't term it as such). Before the internet "happened in the k.o.p., we had the Great Riyadh Hail Storm of '96 (or wuz it '97") which left all exposed vehicles looking like golf balls!

The great fun was, when the heat came back on a few months late,r was the the funny-ass "pinging" sounds coming from all around in the parking lots as the metal started heating up and expanding, thereby causing it to expand and the former "dimples" disappeared from the vehicles! "Ping'", "Phang" "Phung" "Phong"!!! Laughing It went on for days!!! Laughing

Do you remember that one, John?

Dewar NCTBA,

It was '97, as I recall. I got caught in a locust swarm in the early 90s.
And here's an impressive video of a recent sandstorm there (but I can recall at least one just as bad, if not worse,)

Impressive! I remember one in the early-ish 90's that lasted for a few days. We didn't venture into the wine-making room for that period and when I entered it after the storm, it wuz a quarter full of sand. We had moved into a brand new building w/o a basement and and it had settled, a window blew out and sand had infiltrated. We had the "workers" in there all day...shovels in hand clearing out the room...

Ah, the memories of the k.o.p!
