I would like to know if 20,000 AED is enough to purchase major appliances
such as a stove, fridge, and washer ?
Is it normal for some teaching contracts under ADEC to state that they will
either provide furnished housing OR a furniture allowance ?
I'm confused!! |

A single person with simple tastes and a small (-ish) flat could squeeze by. AED 30,000 is standard.

They're so darned new on this inititive, who can say?

I'm NCTBA!  Actually, you're redundant (in the American sense) as "sahara" and "desert" are the same thing...but, I suspect you already knew that!

I agree- this new initiative does not sound very solid to me.

On top of the furniture allowance, my salary will be about 17,000 AED...

30,000Dhs isn't the norm - 20,000Dhs is. You'll be fine Sahara or Desert, whichever it is you should now be known by according to Never Ceased to Be Amazed indicating he himself is something of the past!  If you have been offered either furnished or unfurnished accommodation with an allowance this is nothing more than an indication that ADEC can't locate the former for you. ADEC isn't new to putting teachers in schools either, they've been doing it for 3 years now, just not with the same job role description as these new ones are, but they'll have experienced advisors in place to guide you.
17,000Dhs for a single teacher is good. Don't worry! Though one last point is this - make certain ADEC is locating the accommodation for you and that you don't have to do that yourself. |

Shame on you Zoot, of speaking of me in the past. I'm currently employed there...am on my third contract and have always been been offered AED 30,000.
But if you have to diminish me to build your cred, then so be it. I've watched your contributions to the board over the past year or so and thought how I worldn't have accepted the contracts that you have accepted...so if, in your world, AED 20,000 and other perks such as not having your children's education paid for as ADEC doesn't offer is standard, then I guess that AED 20,000 is about right for yer crowd.

AED30,000 has been the norm for the past 10 years (at HCT and other reputable employers).
New stove - anywhere from 1200 - 2500 AEd
Washing machine - another 1000
Fridge - perhaps another 1200 +
TV, DVD player smallish stereo - can get by with up to 1200AED
Pots/pans dishes, cutlery other small household essentials - probably between 500 - 1000 depending on your tastes and needs
beds (with a decent mattress) another 1200 - 1500
On and on - it all depends on where you shop, what standard of quality you buy and how many people in your household. |

I got 30,000 last year. It covered a very nice bed, bedroom set (2000-3000), cooker (1200 for the gas cooker...find out if you get gag piped in or not. If not, plan on paying double that for an electric cooker), fridge(anywhere from 1000-2000 for an average fridge), a larger TV (first one ever at 4600), spare bed and frame, microwave, basic kitchen necessities, curtains (if you have these made, they will set you back...at least 4000-5000 for a 2 bedroom flat. If you don't have these made you'll understand why people pay for blackout curtains), towels, linens, sofa (at least 3000 for a decent quality one), area rugs(s), washer (900), and wardrobe.
Abu Dhabi flats rarely come w/ 'white appliances' such as the cooker, fridge, and washer (this was, at one time, more common in Dubai). Nicer flats comes w/ built-in wardrobes. If not, expect to drop at least 2000 on those.
If you're buying in AD, I would suggest checking out the Costless store in Mena Port (you could tell a taxi that it's beside the Co-Op in Mina Port). The cost less store had the cheapest appliances overall. They have a load of different vendors all on teh same floor. Like what you see? The clerk writes it up, arranges delivery, and you pay for all your purchases (regardless of the vendor) at the front on your way out. It's a great way to see a lot of different prices/quality of appliances. I believe all vendors deliver large appliances for free.

| I thought even unfurnished house or apartment should provide the basic kitchen facilities--stove, fridge, and washing machine. These stuff are not furniture. Correct me if I am wrong. |

When I lived in Dubai, it was common to find them, yet I wasn't shown one flat in Abu Dhabi that came w/ those appliances. Other expats who moved here before me said that high-end accommodation in ADdid tend to have these but not the rest. If you're living in Abu Dhabi, expect to buy them. |

| I knew you'd be offended Never Ceased to Be Amazed and you're absolutely right - why did I apply with those employers? I don't have the answer either except that once burned twice shy as the saying goes. With ADEC not paying school fees it's a lousy deal for people with children, though the OP has said s/he doesn't have children. |
