If you answered "yes" to any or all of these questions, then Indonesia and specifically Semarang in Central Java is the place where you can "continue" or "begin" your teaching career and "adventure"....... Studyworld Language School has been operating for over 2 years and is considered to be a very progressive school in many areas, especially in terms of its "vision". The 'ownership' teachers and staff are dedicated to providing "excellent quality language classes at reasonable prices".

This was posted in the Int'l job ads section the other day. Is it just me or are they over using and mis using quotation marks? I think their intention was to draw attention to certain features but it really comes across quite differently: ie that the ownership is not real, that its vision is questionable, that nothing is quite what it seems, etc, etc.

Am I being nit picky? I see this too often in my day to day 'life' and find it quite 'absurd' and 'misinformed'. Then again, I'm just a 'teacher'.

Kind 'regards'

Very Happy Yaramaz

I agree. They make for a very choppy reading. Everything in moderation, including quotation marks! (Commas' and parentheses' uses, however, [and what the hell, let's throw in semi-colons' and brackets' uses as well; why discriminate?], are infinite.)

Arch quotation marks are not only a sign of poor grammar but usually also of weak analytical skills. I put this in the same category as using a conjunction (and, but, so, because) to begin an incomplete sentence.

I , and I suspect many others who value high quality writing would skip over this ad immediately due to this style. It doesn't sound to me like it was written by anyone I think I would get on with.

THe quotation marks are simply way too marked. I have a feeling the person who wrote it has a similar personality. Way too quirky for me.

In Qatar, every important word in exam papers or other documents had to be put in (brackets) or whatever the Americans call them (probably parentheses, if they can spell or pronounce the word).

And i do 'see's what you mean )not that seeing is everything) but i agree you do have to 'have' 'vision'. The question is like, is ('Vision") a Good Thing or a Bad Thing?

Do you know another way to punctuate this:

Dear John:
I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever happy--will you let me be yours?
Gloria

This way is funnier:

Dear John:
I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men, I yearn. For you, I have no feelings whatsoever. When we're apart, I can be forever happy. Will you let me be?
Yours,
Gloria

(ps. I don't claim authorship, but I'm unable to give credit as I've forgotten where I came across this)
