|
|
Does anybody know about the employment by Heriot Watt University - Dubai Campus.
- How is the work stability over there
- Salary range
- housing allwance
- Students quality
How it is compared to other institutions in UAE like HCT, PI, and AUS.
It seems it is a new univ in UAE, how does this sound.
Any information is highly appreciated.

Don't know about Dubai, but Herriot-Watt's main EAP people in the main campus in Scotland (Edinburgh), are very active within BALEAP (British Association of Lecturers of English for Academic Purposes - see http://www.baleap.org.uk/. It is one of a select few UK universities which run continually-validated Pre-sessional EAP courses, initial accreditation being a particularly arduous process. Whether Herriot-Watt's UK EAP activity and standard travels well to Dubai is another point; in theory, it should . BALEAP, by the way, is obviously UK-based, and has been trying to maintain professional, scholarly and academic standards and conditions in tertiary EAP in the UK for many years now. As far as I know, there is no other EAP-dedicated professional organisation like it (IATEFL and TESOL cater for the whole gamut of TEFL, including EAP). Large-scale three day BALEAP conferences are run in the UK every 2 years; two 1-day Professional Issues conferences are held each year, too. Herriot-Watt hosted the 3-day conference in 2005. BALEAP also publishes a peer-reviewed journal. |

the only thing i know is that a friend of a friend did her MBA there and complained about useless faculty who read slides sent over from scotland and cant even answer simple questions. doesnt sound right as a work environment. plus i would be careful signing up for non-governmental institutions at this point in time (recession etc.). not to forget the ridiciulous oversupply of british and other unis in dubai, i am not sure how long it will be until there is a "market consolidation" of some sorts... |

Hi Tiberio,
Yes I agree with you. That was mentioned and let you feel that you will not do anything there except reading the slides. Also, they have no idea how to support the housing in Dubai which is a main and very critical issue. Yet I do not know how they are running programs include under grad and post grad in a reasonable way without having sufficient and qualified staff. |

Good advice from Tiberio. Dubai Aerospace University or something similar left over a weekend and the GM/HCT partnership has disappeared. |

What is GM/HCT partnership? General Motors? Are you referring to George Mason? They had no relationship to HCT.

General Motors had, for a short time, a building at DMC. They were to run training courses, etc., but it didn't happen and it's now the CERT building. |

Really? How funny... I can't imagine for what purpose. Training mechanics perhaps? I wouldn't think the idea of starting a factory there would be economically feasible. (especially now...)

The idea originated some years ago so a building was put up; that took some time. By then, the agreement had fallen through for whatever reason so Dubai Aerospace College moved in until their own premises were built. The government pulled the plug on them and they disappeared over a weekend, leaving students, not many and not Emirati, with no courses to attend and teachers without jobs. Now CERT has moved in and it's the IELTS Centre until the new Technology and Research City, or something like that, is built in Academic City. There may have been a residual GM presence last year. Who knows for 2009/10? |

OMG! General Motors had a building at the DeLorean Motor Company!!! Does Land Rover know about this? Belfast is their turf! If you think that region has seen "the troubles" jes' wait till this gets out!
BTW, shouldn't this conversation be on the NORTHERN IRISH board???
