I have seen this discussion spring up in a number of threads, but wanted to start a new one, as the economy has changed dramatically in recent months and, thus, the advice of veteran teachers may have changed.
I'm going to be moving to Japan on Aug. 6 to look for work as a teacher. I'm TEFL-certified and have traveled around Japan extensively, though I've never taught there. I'm conversational and have a few years of experience tutoring (not teaching) ESL students. My plan is to go to Japan and look for work on a tourist visa rather than applying blindly along with 50 other people for one position. I'm fortunate that I can afford to do this.
In applying for jobs from the States, however, it seems like the job market is really hurting right now. I keep getting "sorry we're not hiring right now." So my question is this:
Will going there and job hunting on foot make that much of a difference in this economy?
Having lived there before, I know what I am getting into in terms of the living situation. Thus, I am not picky about money or location--I just need a position that comes with a work visa. I'm just not so sure that going there will make that much of a difference. Someone reassure me, quickly. |

Not my advice, that's for certain...

Not the best of timing. A week later is Obon, major national holiday. Plus, August is down time overall for many places.

With the economy the way it is right now, I'd be surprised if you faced fewer than that even coming here.

It will make you available to more employers than if you were to stay at home. Some employers see physical presence here as a benefit, because it shows commitment. It will give you the opportunity to get used to the lay of the land (in addition to the experience you already have had here). It will also give you more chance to network with people.
Of course, you'll have to support yourself during that time, so expect to come with US$4000-5000 and wait 2-4 months for that first paycheck.

Be a little picky, though. Don't be desperate. |
