Hi all,

I am posting this message in hopes to find information on teaching English abroad in Europe. More particularly in Spain and in Spanish speaking countries in Latin America. I have been looking into various internet sites but I have heard mixed things about some of the programs offered through Teachabroad and CIEE. I have also heard about scams, so I wanted to find out more from any of you who have successfully done so (worked abroad) or have experience with any of these programs. One of the main things I am looking for is a position that offers some sort of compensation for teaching and is safe, secure, and legitimate. I do not expect to be paid high amounts of money but a compensation that is sustainable would be a plus. Any thoughts, ideas, or advice on where to look, programs, how to secure a position, etc, would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks all!

Assuming that you are American, you will have a problem with getting a work visa for Spain (and other western European countries). Neither program you mention can get work permits for non-EU citizens - it's national law.

Latin America is a legal option for US citizens.

I suggest that:

You need to read some of the earlier posts on this Spain board regarding working in Spain as an American. There are lots, and I bumped three or four up just yesterday for another newbie.

Then get back to us if you still have more specific questions.

Working as a non-EU citizen, Americans deported, and there's another one.

If you're American (or Canadian) with at least a couple of years of college under your belt, you might look into the North American Language and Culture Assistants Program. If only this had existed when I was younger and didn't have a family to support, I definitely would've done this. Read about it at http://www.mec.es/sgci/usa/en/programs/us_assistants/default.shtml

Good luck!
