My landlord ran up to me this morning while I was on the first floor to get something, huge elated smile on face: "Hi! Now I raise your rent!" with new amount written out on a piece of paper. The "reason": the US dollar is unofficially trading at 18,550, so she says "I help you. I only charge you 18,000 per dollar." Oh, how nice. Of course one can check and find the official one is lower, not to mention I don't have US dollars anyhow, my money is just like hers. That's also not to mention that everything at the building has gone downhill over the last year or so, cleaning, service etc. |

What a bonehead!
People! Don't accept any lease written in anything but Vietnamese Dong. The police won't recognize it and you won't get any support from the courts for violations of the contract. If you're in Vietnam the currency is VND not US dollars. Don't be a chump, this is a smart landlord's way into changing whatever they want, whenever they want because this isn't a legal contract. |

It's illegal to contract in dollars, but landlords do it to hedge against inflation and devaluation.
Welcome to Vietnam! |
