hi all,
i guess you guys are best placed to give me the low-down.
(1) if i turn up in shanghai in september, what are my chances of landing a half-decent univ. job teaching english?
(2) what sort of pay could i expect?
(3) what is the cost of living in shanghai?
(4) is shanghai as fun as they make out?
my background: first degree, celta, about 7 yrs teaching xp, two references from short-term posts in uk universities, one reference from short-term contract with british council, references from some ielts test prep centres. no ma/ no delta.
my focus is on saving money but i don't want to go to the middle-east. i would like to enjoy this coming year a little while saving.
i applied for a job in shanghai recently that was paying 18K - 28K GBP but i was not short-listed. are there many jobs like this available?
cheers

You've obviously got the right qualifications/experience but September will be too late for universities, I would think. Language mills for a few months while you settle and then try to get in 2nd semester? |

What kind of fun? How could anybody answer that question unless you tell what your idea of fun is? What do you enjoy? Golf? Bowling? Knitting? Watercolor painting? |

Really OP, these questions have been done to death (following your disturbing "termination" theme).
You should at least claim that the search function on here wasn't working when you tried it. Though even a brief search on google would have given you some answers.
But hang in there, probably some kind soul will give you the answers you don't seem to want to look for for yourself.
And yes, many people find Shanghai fun. Are you the same as those people?? |

is it fun in general and why should that be so? no debate, no qualifying things. let people interpret the question as they will and then tell their own story.
i dont see it as an intelligence test or that there is some protocol which i am not abiding by. if i have failed the intelligence test, then please may i have a certificate attesting to the fact.
trawling through threads is boring. i want people to respond and answer my questions, which must be quite easy.
thanks. |

teach them or kill them
my friend coined that when i was applying to military intelligence - he was of the opinion that the army was a load of crap and that i should be a teacher instead.
i was weighing things up when he uttered the phrase - it seemed quite whimsical.
now i am teaching muslims in tunisia and they are very nice people. tunisia is a very boring place and almost everybody who works here agrees, so it safe to generalise at times i think. |

disclaimer: not all muslims are nice people - forgive the generalisation
also, forgive me for defining people by their religion
they are arabs for the most part i think |

I agree.
Clearly you are going to find both nice and displeasent people from any nationality, ethniticity, religion, creed or political orientation. |

According to a 2007 report I surfed up, Shanghai is the 26th most expensive city in the world (this puts it above Dubai and Los Angeles, among other cities which are not cheap). I applied for two universities that were paying 11,000, but no housing or transportation and lots of down time that was unpaid. Not nearly enough.
Shanghai is a fun place if you like night life and have deep pockets. I was detained in the airport there once for a couple of hours (don't ask), but otherwise have not been there, but I have had some skype friends there for some time, and I have this impression from them.
Shanghai has 20 MILLION people. That may make it attractive to some people, but not to me. |

Shanghai is loads of fun. It has several large, well-established knitting clubs, and they're always welcoming new members. The basket-weaving scene is awesome, and you can get a loom at a decent price if you know where to look.
There are a couple of popular bluegrass music clubs, and several stores specializing in Mork & Mindy figurines and the like.
Not sure as to the furry scene. |
