I am a full time ESL teacher working at a community college in the Chicago area, U.S. Am looking to take a year off to teach overseas with my 11 year old son. Below are some of my specifics. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know which countries would suit my situation the best, or if my idea of looking for work overseas is unrealistic. Thank you so much in advance for your help:

1. I have an M.A. in TESOL/Applied Linguistics and 14 years experience teaching ESL to adults. I also teach employment skills, basic computer skills, Bridge to Careers, and GED classes. In addition, I do teacher training for the adjunct ESL teachers.

2. I have an 11 year old son who would travel with me. I would need to work in a place where he could attend school and that my benefits or pay would help to cover those costs.

3. I am open to any country, and would be interested in doing this in the next year or two. Am particularly interested in the Middle East but open to anywhere.

4. I speak Spanish and German fluently. I have not taught overseas, but I lived in Germany for a year as an exchange student and have traveled to South America, Japan, Mexico and Europe.

5. I am 41 years old and would need a country which was open to a single mother with a child.

Thanks again,
Jennifer

You could look into Oman. The top university is Sultan Qaboos University. There are tons of expat families, so lots of international schools. I think you have to apply early to get your son a spot, though. There are waiting lists at some of the schools.

Hye, Chicago land area! me too. I just PMed you.

I agree with Denise, head for the Middle East, but not Saudi, women can-t get visas for family members. Oman, UAE might be an option.
