I am looking to teach in Japan in about a year. I want to get into the JET program, but was wondering about placement. If I get put in some small town somewhere, is it possible for my wife to find work, or would I be the only one working?

No one can answer the question for you: It all depends on the exact situation.

Your wife would have 2 options (perhaps more).

1. Get a dependent visa and then in order to be eligible for work, get special permission. Easily enough done.

2. Get a work visa instead. First she would have to be hired by a sponsoring employer.

3. If for some strange reason she chose not to do either of the above, she could also get a student visa or cultural activities visa, plus the same special permission as #1.

What kind of work is she interested in doing?
Does she have the qualifications for a work visa?
What is her nationality?

If she is a native speaker of English and has a four-year degree, why doesn't she just apply for JET as well?

First, she could apply to JET, but I'm just thinking if either her or I don't get in, there's one other person looking for a job. I think it would be tough to place both of us close together if we both applied to JET, so we might not get in.

What kind of work is she interested in doing?
She is interested in teaching. She teaches elementary school right now and she loves it. She would want to continue doing that.

Does she have the qualifications for a work visa?
Yes, she has a University degree and I'm sure she could get a work visa.

What is her nationality?
American

Both applying together will not reduce your chances. In several ways, it will increase your chances of being accepted.

Only one of you has to get in. Then the other can get a dependent visa.

Then she should look for work in international schools. Better pay and conditions. You would then be on a dependent visa.

If she went this route, you could either get your own work visa or a dependent visa (see a theme here?).

If either of you is on dependent visa, you can get special permission to work (PT only), or you could also get your own separate work visa (directly, or converted from a dependent visa) to allow FT work.

On dependent visa, if someone works PT and makes over 1.1 million yen, the other (sponsoring) person can no longer claim them as a tax exemption. Heads up.
