How much would the rent be on a studio or one bedroom in Adu Dhubi? I've heard that the housing market is going down. OK, so I know there can be a broad range, but a simple place for a frugal female teacher.

Why are you wanting to rent anything? If you're coming to Abu Dhabi and not being provided with housing by your employer, don't come. The cost isn't the only issue, it's locating housing that's a problem, too. Dubai is where the number of rentals is increasing, not Abu Dhabi.

I've heard on another forum that rentals are falling off island. On island prices seem to be holding but availability increasing. I would guestimate 85k for a studio 125k for a one-bed, on island.

I talked with a colleague this morning and he said rentals are still going up--suggesting an influx of people relocating from Dubai. He said that there is a one bedroom in his building that's going for 150K. He described the place as being very small.

You could search local newspaper ads.
For example:

I've been keepign tabs on the housing prices here in AD. I have an empty studio behind me (stand alone building) that is going UNRENTED FOR MONTHS because they're asking around 100,000. Lots of units are coming available. 2 bedrooms are finally back in the 150,000-180,000 range on the island. Loads of them? No, but they're out there. I saw a gorgeous 2 bedroom 1 bath unit in a subdivided villa on Karamah running for 150,000. I think one could find a studio (not in khalidiya) for under 100,000.

Where do teachers live who don't have housing given to them?

Are there any affordable apartment hotels you recommend?

Can I ask why you want an apt hotel? The place I stayed in, the Abu Dhabi Plaza Hotel, had a deal going w/ one of the companies placing employees there (this is last August). Another tenant told us their company was paying 180,000/yr for the furnished 1 bedroom flat. Personally, I would steer you away from this particular hotel...uncommon amount of theft by the cleaning/maintenance staff. Sands Hotel just off Muroor rumoured to be reasonably priced and reasonably kept up for an older hotel/apt.
