That word 'thug' came up twice too often for my liking.

And I know next to nothing about Taiwan. But I do know that I'd prefer my workplace to be thug free.

Any "contract" you sign will be worth less than the PAPER on which it is written.

It might serve simply as a statement of understanding among the two parties (you and the school), but no government agency would even look at it....as far as I know.

You seem a bit too uptight, but following your instincts IS the best policy. (I lived in Kaohsiung for 7+ years, so I know that city better than I know Tainan.)

If you have been in Taiwan/Asia for less than one year, then it is normal if everything feels weird.

Did you mention that you hate Taiwan? Let me tell you that Chinese New Year will be VERY boring. Make sure you have some plans.....

You seem surprised that the agent and the school seem to be less than honorable gentlemen. My understanding is that you are seeking illegal employment. Under those circumstances I think it fair to assume that they are not honorable people, if they are willing to abet you in securing legal employment. I think that you could expect to have problems.

I know that it was made legal for foreigners to work at two schools legally, and provided the law hasn't changed then this might be the best way to go.

Your primary ARC provider gives consent for you to accept secondary employment elsewhere. The primary and secondary employer then into a services share agreement. Both employers names should then be added to your ARC. This of course all relies upon the fact that you have a good relationship with your primary employer. If all of this can be satisfied then you can legally work two jobs.

I am not an agent basher and believe that they serve their purpose, but if you are concerned with the agent, then why not just find a job yourself. There are plenty out there!

This highlights the possible dangers of using agents....I'm not going to say don't use them as I used one a few weeks ago when I returned to Taiwan so I had more job options available but found a job myself.

I taught in Kaohsiung for five years and worked in a variety of locales from kindergartens, Da Hwa Primary, St. Dominics to SYS university. My ARC sponsor allowed me to do so, but really it was a violation of my work permit (according to some officers in Foreign Affairs, who I was tutoring under the table). Taiwan is a land of shades of grey(I'm not talking about the smog either ) and what Foreign Affairs lets you away with one week changes the next. Hell, the MOE actively recruits foreign teachers for the public schools, or did, even though it is technically a violation of the work permit. Don't take the contract seriously as they aren't legitimate. If they try to intimidate you with it it is a bluff.

I strongly recommend you stay as far away from that agent and school as possible.
