Hello. Sorry if this has been discussed, but I just didn't see a thread on this specifically. I have no knowledge of the requirements of European countries, just the Asian ones, as that's where most of my interest is, but Spain has always been one as well.

What are the basic requirements or qualifications for one to work in Spain as an English teacher or an ALT? I'm just highly curious.

Thanks to anyone who can help me with this information.

1. A passport from an EU member country (North Americans are not technically eligible for legal working permits in most cases - check out the thread about working on a student visa for one of the very few possible loopholes)

2. Certification from an on-site course 100+ hours, including supervised teaching practice with real students. CELTA is the name brand, but there are some generics that meet the standard. Online certifications put you at the bottom of the hiring pool.

3. A professional-looking CV with no typos
4. Appearing knowledgeable and enthusiastic at interview
5. Appearing to be a teacher rather than a backpacker
6. ...?

Thank you for the information. I'm actually studying to become a teacher, so I'm "starting out" for the most part. My resume wouldn't be very impressive in this regard, as I'm just getting into the field. I also have gaps in employment due to the job market.

Anyway, I only have a Bachelor's in Social Sciences, and right now, studying for my Praxis here in the States so that I can get into a Teacher Preparation program at Old Dominion University sometime down the road.

I'm interested in overseas teaching, and Spain has always been of interest to me, as well as Japan, hence why I was asking what the qualifications were for someone interested in ESL teaching or ALT teaching.
