What/where do you consider the best place to work in North America is?
Suggest a specific place, a city, a type of teaching situation or whatever, just tell us why.
Finally, would you rather work at "home" or abroad? |

Tough question, where is the best place in NA. I suspect that most of us from NA have only taught in our home city and various cities abroad. It would be difficult to find the "best" city in NA if you've only taught in one or two places. Vancouver is the only city I've taught in NA and I think it is a great place to teach and live, but there is a lot of competition for the good jobs. Ideally, the best place to work there would be a community college or university ESL program.
I love my job and if my current job was somehow magically transported to Canada, I'd be a happier camper. Japan is not so bad though. |

I'd have to say San Francisco, although I've neither lived nor worked there. (I did spend a number of years in Berkeley, though.) Yeah, so it is ridiculously expensive, with rent eating up something like 50% of the average salary, the EFL job market has gone down the toilet recently, most positions are part-time, etc., etc., but a girl can dream, right?
The only place I've taught in the States is Monterey, about 100 miles south of San Francisco. I certainly wouldn't turn down the right job there either.

I suggest place to teach be separated from place to live. A couple of years ago in Montreal, I met an employee of a private language school. He got $15 per hour, hours dependant on number of students. Another ESL teacher was making $55 per hour at a university's English for academic purposes program. She had a choice of four afternoons or five mornings per week.
Both had MA's.
I suspect similar differences exist in many places. |
