|
|
After reading the feedback in the other thread I posted recently, I've decided it might be a good idea to go to Japan with JET instead of going with an eikaiwa. I'll just save the eikaiwa option if I'm rejected. I'd rather make 50,000 more a month, not have a lengthy, expensive job hunt, etc.
I'm not sure if I can get into JET, but I think it's best to try getting into JET first before going with an eikaiwa.
Here are my questions:
1. My main question is this: is it realistic to become a CIR (Coordinator of International Relations), and if so, what are the qualifications?
2. Under the new JLPT system, do I need N2 to become a CIR? Is N3 enough? Or is the competition so high that most people will have N1?
I guess I'm just trying to decide how hard I should study Japanese over the next year if I want to stand a realistic chance of becoming a CIR. I think I could raise my Japanese level to JLPT Level N2 (new system) if I really worked at it. I don't think N1 is realistic, though.
3. What other qualifications help with becoming a CIR?
4. Let's suppose that I succeed in passing the JLPT (Level 2 or N2 on the new system). Do I stand a higher chance of becoming an ALT, or are my chances of becoming an ALT or CIR about the same? I'm only allowed to apply for one position, which is why I ask. I'd rather become an ALT than not be able to enter the JET Programme at all because I applied for CIR and was rejected. |

Kind of the unofficial (and pretty unmoderated) JET forum. Have you been over there and checked out the flaming and vulgarity of some of the posts? There's never a dull moment over at BD. Check it out if you have a good sense of humour and not easily offended (or possibly a patriotic Brit)
Otherwise you could try:

http://www.cirhomepage.org
You'll need to register to even read posts on the CIR home page. |

Man, you're right, that Skybus guy is a real a-hole...
He was like "with your dodgey (sic) qualifications I doubt you could even get an ALT position."
Excuse me? When I apply for JET, I'll have a degree, probably JLPT N3, 2.5 years of experience teaching English, and CELTA. He's saying my qualifications to become an ALT are "dodgey (sic)?" So I guess he thinks every ALT has better than that. Yeah right. Most CIRs probably beat me, true, but he was like "you're dreaming if you think you can even make it into JET at all with any kind of job" -- what an arse.
However, I agree with the jerk that becoming a CIR is a dream. From what I've read since then, it seems like only one elite person per area gets picked. I strongly doubt I'll have the best Japanese in the state of Virginia by 2011. Strongly doubt it.
Man, you're right, that place is unmoderated.
Anyways, does anyone know if I can just apply to become a CIR on a crapshoot, and if I'm not accepted, become an ALT? Or does rejection from CIR mean "NO JET FOR YOU?" |

I don't have the latest application available, but it used to be the case that if you applied for CIR they would ask you on the paperwork whether you would accept an ALT position if not offered a CIR job.
In terms of interviews, it will depend on who you get on the panel - if you get an interview for a CIR role, they may ask you outright if you would consider ALT. It's a double edged question. They'll *consider* you for an ALT role, but they may or may not ask. |
