Hello group,
I'd really like some feedback regarding where to buy a good Western style Washer and Dryer in Riyadh and/or Jeddah. When last in the Kingdom, I purchased a washer from a local store. It didn't work very well given that I had it on the third floor and the water pressure sucked. Any suggestions?

| Whirlpool shops and big stores that sell Whirlpool seem to be available around the world...certainly in Saudi. I have GE washer and dryer in my place, and it's in a fairly remote place. |

You can get Whirlpool driers in Saudi. I bought one in 2005 and shipped it to Sri Lanka in 2006. Only problem is they don't sell them in Lanka so I can't get parts.
Hot water can be a problem in Saudi. If your water is not hot enough and you set a high temperature setting the washer will release it all and start again, thus ensuring the water is never hot enough. |

| Go to Extra and Emax for the largest variety. They are big electronics stores similar to Circuit City/Best Buy in the US. If you don't find what you are looking there, go to stores of the various brands (Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, etc). |

| Why are driers necessary in a place with temperatures in the 40's? In Q8 we used to put washing outside and it was dry within 15 minutes. |

If you are in Jeddah (or Abu Dhabi or Dubai), it is so humid that it can take days for clothes to dry. If you are in Riyadh, you probably don't *need* it, but many of us (like me) hate sheets and towels dried on a line because they get so stiff. I always had a dryer... even in Kuwait.

Do the apartments provided by HCT (regardless of location, and I realize they have colleges all over the UAE) provide standard American washer and dryer connections?
I always used clothes dryers in KSA. My permanent press shirts and pants come out of the dryer wrinkle-free and ready to wear.
I refuse to iron!!!!!
I realize that others don't mind it, or perhaps like it, but not me.
If this is off-topic, I apologize. |

No. You're not in Kansas...,er...ksa anymore. There is nothing that is of American standards in the U.A.E. It is British-leaning in all fashions. I expect that British kitchens (where most, if not all of the washer/dryer connections are) are smaller than American ones.

The villas at the Romazin compound in Riyadh are British-spec. The kitchens are cavernous. But no dryer, only a tiny, toy front-loading portable "washer."
All the rooms are cavernous. A lot of wasted space in those villas. |

I get you, but unless you're getting on in places other than AD or Dubai, you won't be living the villa life. And, not to argue, whilst the voltage might have been 240, I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that the villas where you lived were built to accommodate Saudi families. Our 2000-square metre one at the Jadawal Compound surely was. Who else could use eight bathrooms in the same house except a family of 12 or 13?
Naw, in the bigger cities, you'll be living in a flat apartment. They may have some accommodation provided by HCT that have American standard connections, but I don't think that there will be a lot of them.
