I am a licensed teacher with experience and I am thinking of maybe moving to Poland to teach English. I'm also looking at some other countries too, but I would like to get a feel of how Poland may be.

I'm still new at the idea of just showing up and looking for jobs. Is this a feasible way of finding work in Poland? If so, what schools should I look up?

Another issue is whether or not Poland requires the dreaded EU visa. I've heard some things stating that it does and some things stating that it doesn't. I guess I am just confused.

If I do decide to show up, when does the Poland school year start?

Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

Elementary, jr. high and high schools all start Sept. 1 unless it falls on a Sat. or Sunday in which case they will have their opening meeting on the first day after the first.

Private schools...I'm not sure about. Language schools seems to follow the school year though they do have courses all year long, including the summer. But things around here are so quiet during the summer that arriving too early will only cost you money though it would give you a chance to acclimate.

Universities and other "higher schools" tend to start the first of October. You could always check into the American school if you are licensed teacher. Sometimes they need teachers and you can make "real money".

Poland and the other 'new' EU member countries in the region still allow non-EU citizens to apply for work permits, supported by an employer. It's a hassle, but do-able in most cases. There are some current threads here about the day-to-day system for getting visas - I'll try to bump up some threads for you to read.

Just remember, things can be significantly less 'standardised' in this part of the world Very Happy

American in Poland and Hire a Professional (forgot the exact wording, sorry) both include current info regarding legalities.
