I just took interest in the opportunity to teach abroad and may be planning my experience for next summer. I have done extensive research on some specific countries- Taiwan (A LOT), Korea, Japan, China, Singapore, a little on the Czech republic (I've been there too). However, I still don't have a general idea of what level I could possibly teach and where would be the best place for me to start out. I have a bachelor's in English and am certified to teach secondary education in English. I am also looking to be endorsed to teach Special Ed. as well.
What's the highest level I could teach?
What's the most profitable level I could teach?
What is the general "game plan" in getting everything in order for a trip abroad such as this one?
Which country allows for the best combination of money earned, entertainment, and cheap rent? (Haha, talk about picky huh?)
I appreciate all your help here, I am trying to plan ahead and get the most information possible in order to have the best experience possible. Thank YOU!!!  |

Money can be made in
Middle East
intl schools around the world www.tes.co.uk or www.ibo.org
Institutes for young learners
or Business English
or exam prep
Game plan, apply, sign a contract with a school, get a visa, then hop on a plane.
Best country depends on the contract you get. There are people here in Peru getting 5 bucks an hour and others getting 3K a month plus benefits, depends where you work. See above. Try to get free housing and flights. |

Does that mean you want to work only for the summer months?

Second question first. "Profitable" is in the eyes of the beholder. How frugal you are will vary with the next person. It also depends on where you live (country choice as well as rural vs. urban setting).
First question now. In Japan your BA will get you entry level work: ALT, or eikaiwa (conversation school). Being certified is good for international schools, but they usually also require a couple of years of teaching experience in your home country.
As far as special ed goes, I would imagine that in some cases you do NOT want to teach special ed classes without being highly fluent in the local language.
Highest level you could teach is not the same as what you would start out doing. If you don't improve your qualifications, a BA with subsequent experience in Japan will not get you very far. Perhaps FT work in a private HS, but even that may not be tenured, so you'd have to move every 3 years.

Learn more about the country you want to work in. Learn that language a bit. Keep improving yourself.

Yup, too picky. Too many variables, IMO, to give you a straight answer, especially cultural variation. If you've been to all those countries you mentioned earlier, what are your feelings about them? |

I appreciate the advice....like I said, this is merely to get a general idea of where I want to go and what steps to take to get there.
In response to your comments- I am trying to plan this out so that I can depart next summer and stay an undetermined length. Additionally, I suppose that the term profitable can many different things, but money is certainly a common issue to take into account when making decisions as risky as going to a foreign country. All in all, I appreciate your help and will continue to check out this wonderful forum for help in making my decision! |
