My husband and I are applying for jobs in KSA. Mostly we are applying to the "married couple" positions and my husband is also applying individually to other jobs for men only. We are also thinking of starting a family soon.

I know that compensation packages usually provide for any dependents, but as a woman, if I accept a job and then fall pregnant what might I expect in terms of maternity leave? Is this generally addressed in work contracts? Would I be expected to simply stop working when I informed my employer, and if so could I then just remain in-country under my husband's permit? Would it be a complicated ordeal to change my status from having a work permit to becoming a dependent of my husband?

I heard from an unreliable source that foreign women teachers must stop working as soon as they are "showing"- is this true or is it possible for one to work well into a pregnancy?

If anyone has ANY info about maternity leave, changing status from a work permit to dependent or.....anything related- please share.
Thanks.

You're right - this source is very unreliable. There's no reason why pregnant woman should not continue to work for as long as they see fit, right up to the days before the birth of the baby, if they want. I have had several colleagues who have had babies, and as far as I know, hte sitatuion is not dissimilar to other countries - you get a certain amount of paid leave (not sure how much) which they are obliged by law to give you.

As for your situtation, whether or not you get a job once you arrive in KSA, you will still be classed as a 'dependent' because you did not enter the country on a work visa. You wont' get a 'work permit' in these circumstances - in fact, your employer would technically be breaking the law by hiring you, but it happens all the time and you almost never hear of anyone getting into trouble for it. That said, because of the ambiguous nature of such arrangements, your employer might just decide to lay you off so as not to pay you maternity leave, and just rehire you when/if you wish to return to work.

What do you mean scot47?, aren't female teachers allowed to have any maternity leave? ok if they don't pay them, but how many days/months? are they allowed to stay home? Confused

Thanks for your input. Perhaps I wasn't clear but, I would be entering on a work visa- both my husband and I are qualified teachers and we are applying for jobs in KSA.
So my other question was- If I accept a 12 month contract, and I enter the country on a work visa, if I fall pregnant and either take maternity leave or stop working, what is the process by which I would change my status to a dependent under my husband as I would no longer be working? Is this doable? A pain in the arse?
Also, if I was to accept a position, fall pregnant and decide to stop working- would there be a penalty for not fulfilling my contract?

Thanks again.

Read the Ministry of Labor laws in an earlier thread.

Article 150 and following relate to women with a bun in the oven.
