My husband and I received contracts to work in the KSA. Today they sent him (my husband) authorisation numbers to apply for the visa and my name was listed as a dependant together with our daughter's name. Does this mean that they declined the offer to hire me? Did this happen to any couple before?

Any feedback is highly appreciated.

It does sort of sound like it, but the only way to know for sure is to contact the university. Any answers you get here will be simply speculative.

Thanks Cleopatra for your reply

I have just contacted them, They said that they applied for an authorization for me but it is still not ready, and that if I go to the kingdom as a dependent, I can join my department upon arrival but resides in the KSA as a dependent.

What is the difference between being a dependent and having work visa?
Do you think I should wait for my visa authorization or just let my husband apply for my visa as his dependent?

Thank you.

If you are a 'dependent' you are not legally allowed to work.

it's not that big a deal in practice: it happens all the time and the authorities turn a blind eye. I suspect that the university thought it would be cheaper and easier for them to register you as a dependent, rather than go through the costly and time-consuming process of obtaining a work visa for you.

I would advise you to proceed very carefully at this point. Once they have you in the Kingdom as a spouse, they can legally pay you much less and deny you any benefits. I would demand to have something in writing stating that you will be not be treated as a local hire, or you will end up getting s*&^%ed.

Yes, "local hires" routinely get screwed to the tune of half of what foreign hires get.
