Hey, all. First post here. I'm looking at heading to Asia to teach, and I think Laos or Cambodia may be places I might like to try out. I'm concerned that there may not be too many opportunities in Laos, and, to be frank, I'm worried about losing a leg in Cambodia. Anyone have any thoughts on either of those ideas? |

Sounds like you may need an easier intro to Asia, Thailand for example.
I don't think you'll find to many landmines around Phnom Penh or Siem Reap if that puts your mind at rest. Plenty of tourists have trodden those paths these days too.
Never been to Laos but I believe there's still unexploded ordinance to be found there for the intrepid.
Go to Thailand and then go to Cambodia and Laos from there, get a feel for it and see if you like it. |

Hello! I cant decide between Laos and Cambodia! I just need few more answers if anyone can help me:
Hows the expat life like in Vientiane and Phnom Penh for a 25 year old girl? I have been teaching English in China for the past few months, and I am the only foreigner in the city where I am teaching. Even though I have met lots of great Chinese people, I think I need some foreign people around me to share my experience with; so any advice/experiences would be really appreciated!
Also, what are my chances to get an English teaching job over there as a non-native English speaker? I am from Quebec and still have that French accent That have never been a problem in India or China but what about Laos and Cambodia? I hold a TEFL certificate and a degree in an unrelated field.
Thanks in advance for your help! |

I'll be in Vientiane in a couple of weeks to have a look-see and will ask about non-native speaking teachers as well as the expat community.
I'll post the info as soon as I can. |

Not sure about Laos, but I like the idea of carousing after school hours with an automatic rifle. So le Cambodge is likely to be more bitchin'. In Cambodia you can strap grenades to your belt and blow other peoples legs off. |

Given that in Laos, Cambodia (and Vietnam) there is a definite French influence, mainly in Vientiane and Ho Chi Minh City, you might feel more comfortable. I have visited all three countries but not worked there so I can't advise you on where to teach. Laos seems to get good raps on this board, not so much info about Cambodia. I believe that the TEFL industry in Vietnam is a lot more developed than the other 2 countries. |

Just tell them you're Canadian and that you are bilingual in English and French. Don't volunteer the fact that English is your second language and it probably won't be a problem. That you are billingual, and that you have learnt English as a second language probably makes you a better teacher in many ways. Good luck! |

I would travel over and check out the places yourself over the course of a few weeks. Laos has a much slower pace of life than Cambodia and the traffic is a bit better. I'm not sure about job opps but there are plenty of backpackers flowing through the major cities (typically from Thailand, to Laos, and heading then down to Cambodia) so you won't be lacking for company. Folks in both countries are very nice. Landmines are only an issue if you go hiking in the backcountry or off roads. Phnom Penh is a very hectic city but can be quite interesting. Plenty of expats there and monied NGO workers. I preferred Laos to Cambodia but I believe it depends on the job opps. I'm not sure how much one would pay as both countries get a larger share of volunteers who probably undercut the paying market. |
