My wife is coming to join me is Saudi Arabia and i was wondering if she will be able to leave the house alone. We'll be living in a nice neighborhood, close to so me shops etc, and I was wondering what life is like for women in Saudi Arabia.
Cheers,

When I leave the house I lock the deadbolt. There is no door latch from the inside to open the door just another keyhole. So when you want to leave your locked house you must unlock it from the inside with a key.
I make sure my wife does not have a key and lock her in so that she doesn't go out when I'm not with her. I also have the key to her castity belt. This is the ashret way.
I'm a buddist. But when in Rome......

Dear Spaceman,
"Can women leave the house alone?"
As long as the lady locks the door as she leaves, I'm sure the house will be perfectly safe.
Regards,

You haven't told us whether you want her to leave the house alone or not. Presuming you don't the trick is to have a combination lock on the door (that way she can't nick the key while you're sleeping).
You will of course have to remember the combination but if you write it down as some simple mathematical function a woman's brain will never be able to work it out. |

TO CLEO:
THanks for you post, but could you elaborate a bit, as in what places is a woman allowed to go alone? How comon is it to see women alone. I was under the impression that they had to be in pairs or more? I'd be glad to hear if that's not the case. |

Just about anywhere - other than the men's area of restaurants, some banks, mosques etc. And that has nothing to do with being a woman alone - groups of women would also be forbidden access to these places.

Saudi women almost never go out alone. If they can't get a relative to accompany them, they will drag along the maid as an 'escort'. However, it's quite common to see expat women out on their own, at least in the big cities and in places such as shopping malls. Taking taxis alone is generally quite alright, though walking for any distance can be unpleasant for a number of reasons, not least the climate. |

Your wife can certainly leave the house alone. The question is, will she be comfortable going around by herself in KSA? It can be pretty scary for a woman by herself at first, and she will probably ask you to accompany you more often than she normally would. But after a while, she'll become more at ease and go out by herself to shopping malls and supermarkets. However, walking down a street by herself could be rather daunting for her for a long time, depending on where you live.
Regardless of where she wants to go, you will still want to find a reliable, trustworthy taxi driver. Most people in KSA will advise a woman not to ever ride with unknown Saudi males driving independent taxis. Most taxi services (with Indian drivers) will be safe for her, but the best bet is to get the number of a driver who comes recommended from other Westerners. Many times, these recommended taxi drivers become personal friends and they can actually be the most valuable people you know in KSA. A good taxi driver knows where and how to get everything done! |

Apparently you live in a city WITH taxis. Al Khafji has no taxis that I am aware of although I am told that they can be summoned by phone. In 4 months here I have never seen one. |

What do you want taxis for in Al-Khafji? There's nowhere to go. |
