having been left out here in the wildernress, its kinda comforting and reassuring to know that a quick flick on the sw radio can allow me to keep up with wats going on around the world. Im talking about the BBC world service.
Not only the news but an extraordinary variety of top quality programmes including poetry reading (sadly, last of the season today), cultural and religious discussions, a half-hour brit comedy show, letter from america, health issues, as well as music ... i could go on. It beats the TV and net by far as a means to catch up with current issues.
While I feel disappointments at the way the country itself is being run and its (government's) sometimes crazy policies, it makes one proud to be a brit once again wen we can produce and maintain such a magnifcent world broadcasting service.wat i feel is even more admirable is that it, in my view anyway, knocks the socks off any other English languae international broadcasting service; in range, programme variety, overall professionalism and international sensitvity.
Who else here tunes in on a regular basis ? any particular favouite programmes ? ..... TV ???? Nah !

I also love my shortwave. Listen to it even while at "home." Much prefer radio to TV. Of the majors, the "BEEB" is definitely the best, but as I'm a Canucklehead, I love CBC radio, even though selections on RCI are very limited in most places of the world.
Faves? The Game Show, Just a Minute, which we often play in class. Letter from America and A Jolly Good Show. |

Bear in mind that you can also listen to the BBC on the web. Not sure of the practicalities of that for many of you in relation to web access, censorship and so forth - but worth bearing in mind. |

My little short-wave radio has been a constant companion. Nothing equals the BBC. I have to state that I was unimpressed in 1991 when the British Affairs correspondent was Canadian. Owing to some difficulty with the satellite dish on my block of flats (not apartments) in Saudi, I was unable to receive BBC television for a while and had to put up with CNN in the days before they recruited English speakers. In one news programme, I heard "malnutritured", "metamorphosizing" and "magnomaneous".
I think I must be due for another tirade of abuse from that world power where the English language is murdered, or murderized. Or possibly murderizated. |
