|
|
Could anyone give me a rough idea of how much a married couple'd need to live on with 2 kids under 5? And what do salaries for teaching range from to? The best and the worst employers? I have a CELTA, CELTYL and a PGCE in English and Drama; my husband has the CELTA and DELTA with experience teaching everything under the sun including wee kids and uni courses.
Thanks for any advice you can give |

I did a Sri Lanka search and a certain poster (who refers to himself in 3rd person) says that there really aren't any openings for EFL teachers. Apparently, many Sri-lankans speak English already. This certain poster knows what he's talking about, but tends to point out the non-optimistic side of things.
Good Luck |

I spent a month in Sri Lanka last fall and it's true that most people speak English to some degree. I think there is already a decent sized expat community there so I would attempt to seek out some of their boards. Have you been there before? Do you have any cities in mind that you would like to move to? |

I think your only option would be to secure a job at an international school. Find international schools in Sri Lanka if they exist and contact them about getting a job as an English teacher. |

We were considering Colombo. I've heard that the only school with decent pay is OSC, but I'd consider the British Council too if any vacancies arose. But I have no idea what salaries they pay... |

i would venture a guess and say SL salaries would probably hover around 33% of Bharati salaries, i.e. you're lucky if you get $80 or $90 US dollars a month. |

$80 / $90 per month?! Surely not - I've definitely seen ads for more than this, even with small schools... |

OK minus my sarcasm, Id still guess no more than $200 US per month, as I was offered 1 job for that in Ahmadabad in 2007, and another job in Hyderabad for $275 US/month. (12,000-17,000 rupees) |
