I will be soon living in Al Ain. What companies do you recommend for internet and cell phone services? In addition, do you advise purchasing a lap top in the US or UAE?

USA - get skype on your computer so that the account originates from USA and so it won't get blocked on UAE side. Also you can put on other stuff not available in UAE. |

Splittinghairs,
How do I go about getting this service. Is it done in US or UAE?

coolteacher55, you should buy the laptop in the UAE, then if something goes wrong with it, you can have it repaired there.
Don't worry about getting SKYPE because you can use msn instead then next time you go back to the US, have SKYPE downloaded. |

Do you really not know what Skype is? Then perhaps you don't need it.
Considering that I have never had to have any laptop repaired, I would buy it in the US. But that's me...

Agreed. My primary consideration in buying my MacBook was to get a reliable machine that would work for a few years & not need repair. It seems that computer repair costs are so prohibitively high that it makes sense to buy a new computer when the old one wears out.

Laptop costs are prohibitively high if for example the motherboard goes, or the power supply is attached to the motherboard. Hard disks or memory don't cost much to swap, and you can also get a new screen, though it's probably easier simply to hook the laptop up to an external monitor and keyboard. |

One of our offspring bought a MacBook - it lasted a year. You'd want to be where you purchased it. |

Do you mean the offspring or the MacBook? |

Not in the habit of referring to the offspring as 'it' - does that answer your question? |

Not even on the days when the little darling(s) are driving you crazy?
But, back to laptops... I always bought a low to mid-range computer which nowadays one can get for around $500 in the US. I wouldn't invest in a fancy model with all the bells and whistles. One reason is that the speed of your home connection may not be all that grand anyway... unless you want to pay big bucks to the local monopoly.
Just a thought...

Agreed. I have found that a high quality machine with mid-range specs has served me the best. There's always the new and improved model within a year or two anyway - and they seem to get cheaper to boot.

OP, altho Zoot makes a very good point of buying it where you be...it should be noted that the ME is well-known to be an electronics dumping ground and the warranties don't extend far outside of the region (i.e across the Atlantic or much beyond India), so CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!
Really, it's six of one or a half dozen of the other...

NCTBA - why is it considered an electronics dumping ground? Does that mean poor quality goods are shipped in? |
