I'd like to try my hand at learning something musical. I can't play anything at all and I thought it would be sort of fun to learn how to play a recorder. Can anybody recommend any good places to pick up a relatively cheap one? I stopped into Bic Camera and Tokyu Hands but they didn't have any. I know Ochanomizu is apparently a good place but that's a little far. I'd like something in the Ikebukuro or Shinjuku area.

if you are in ikebukuro, or even shinjuku why not try shimamura music.
in ikebukuro it is above tower records in parco-. They should have what you are looking for. i dont want to disencourage you but you want to learn how to play a recorder? really?

Ochanomizu is only 10 minutes on the Chuo Line from Shinjuku- why not make the trip?

I would second Atlas. I bought a guitar at Shimamura Music and was happy with the selection, price, and service. Of course I didn't bother looking at recorders...

Don't get me wrong, a recorder is about as cool as an instrument gets but personally when I get out my pianika and bust out some tunes I get all the chicks.

I may be wrong but doesn't "play the recorder" have a rather risque euphemism in Japanese? I think you should be careful if you walk around Shinjuku saying you want to play it!!!!

Why is it called a recorder anyway? It doesn't record anything...

Well I picked up a recorder! Didn't have to go very far either. They all play them in school so I guess it shouldn't be too hard to find them. Right now I'm busting out some 'Mary had a little lamb', and 'Happy Birthday'. Smile I'm actually quite pleased-I know the recorder is probably at the very bottom of the pole when it comes to musical quality or difficulty but I literally know nothing about music whatsoever. Now that I've got the notes learned I need to learn how to read them! Smile

The recorder can be lovely, just that it's taught so badly at school. This is a nice example,

Don Quixote has some. I just picked up an acoustic guitar today for 7000 yen. I noticed electric guitars, saxophones, ukeleles, harmonicas... lots of stuff.

Does anyone whose Japanese is better than mine (everyone) know how to ask for electric guitar strings? I'm in Kagawa and I don't even know where to start looking, Saty and You Me don't have music sections.

Recycling shops have all sorts of instruments. Also, you can haggle over the prices.
Enjoy,

I don't know the proper way to ask (only been studying a few weeks), but since nobody else answered,

エレキギターのげんをください (ereki gitaa no gen wo kudasai)

should work okay.

Good one, Bread! I'd've jumped in there but I was stumped. Sad that as I've been here the better part of twenty years.
How's it coming with the recorder, Hoser? Is that anything like a harmolodica? Those are cool.
Enjoy,
