Hi all, I'm a recently qualified PGCE who has an interview for a job in Singapore at a Lorna Whiston School.
I've scanned the web looking for feeback on this company and there's very little that's detrimental, which is a good sign I suppose.
The pay is $4,300 including housing allowance which ain't great but it's more than PGCE's are starting on here in the UK.
I realise rent is expensive but from what I've seen you can get something 'OK' if you're happy to share for about $1,000 a month.
I find the prospect of teaching in Singapore very attractive but I would like to hear from people who have experience or first hand knowledge of Lorna Whiston school in Singapore.
Thanks in advance. |

Hi there! I haven't worked for them but have seen the contract. The company has a fairly good reputation as far as study/tuition centres go but that isn't saying much. With that $ you will be OK especially if you share-most young teachers I know who work at this type of centre tend to share a condo or HDB. The main downside to this type of work is the working hours. It is nearly always Saturday and Sundays(9-5 ish) and 3 afternoons/evenings (3-9ish) during the week. Not a lot of opportunity for a decent social life if that is what you want. From memory LW gives you 6 weeks or more holidays which means you have plenty of time for travel.
If you have 2 years or more teaching experience you could look into International Schools as they are a far more lucrative proposition in terms of pay and conditions. |
