Hi everyone, I did a year's worth of teaching from april 2008 to april 2009. ECC gave me my last paycheck 2 weeks after I had left. (How on earth would I withdraw my money if I'm in America? I thought.) They told me to send my MUFJ cash-card to somebody I trust in Japan, so that that person can send the money back to me here in California. I was wondering if there is a time limit or if they take/freeze my money, since I'm not in Japan anymore.

Also, I'm open to safe transfer methods if anybody knows of some.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I think you just go to a bank in America and ask them to contact the bank in Japan if you used your real passport there to open an account. Transfer may involve a fee but that's less risky than sending anyone your bank card.

Yeah, the money will be in there, no worries about that. You don't need any kind of activity. You will have to send someone you trust your card and have them withdraw the money and send you a postal money order though. It's a messed up system. The company should just send you a check or wire the money to an account you specify back home and have the fee deducted out of the pay. I heard a rumor years ago, that they tax the hell out of your last paycheck when they know you're leaving the country though (doesn't make sense to me, but I wouldn't be surprised somehow), so maybe that's why they put it in your bank even when you don't live there anymore and leave it up to you to get it out somehow.

Hey onesentiment, it seems that there are several ways to transfer your money to your home country. I left some money in a bank in Japan for several years. When I eventually wanted to take out the money, I phoned the bank from overseas (they even had an English speaking customer service representativen who I dealt with), and I asked them to send me the forms to do an international transfer of funds from Japan to my home country, and another form to close my account. I received those forms in the mail, filled them out and sent them back to Japan. Everything was processed and the money was sent to my home bank account without any problem!
