Hello....I'm doing a CELTA course (at Akcent) in September Laughing and I am trying to figure out temporary medical insurance for while I am there (and possibly traveling around Europe) before I can find a teaching job that provides [at least emergency] medical insurance in the C.R. Hopefully I'll only need to enroll for a month or two, beginning in early September. My medical insurer at home in the US will not cover international trips (I checked). I've heard that it's pretty common for expats in the CR to just get emergency/surgery coverage, and just pay doctor visits out-of-pocket.

So far, I've looked at recommendations of QBE & BUPA, but they do not insure US citizens. I am looking at some of the listings on expats.cz and I wanted to see if anyone here had any positive or negative experiences of any of these companies. I'm researching their websites, but I'd also appreciate a thoughtful opinion on any of them. Thanks!

-VZP via Hamilton-Hudson http://www.hamiltonhudson.com/health_vzp.html --> seems more simple than getting insured directly by VZP, get to skip physical exam, etc

-VZP for foreigners (direct) http://www.vzpforforeigners.cz/

-OZP http://www.ozp.cz/en/ --> Not much info on their website

-Worldwidemedical.com (underwritten by Lloyd's of London) http://www.worldwidemedical.com/travel.htm --> not based in the CR

-Insia http://pojistenivip.cz/html/index.php?s1=6 (healthcare section is in Czech only, so this one is doubtful)

-Integra Global http://www.integraglobal.com/ --> not based in the CR

-PVZP http://www.pvzp.cz/en/ --> also related to VZP, looks good too Very Happy

You might check with US-based USAA, though I don't know if they cover non-members.

Thanks, Spiral. I just checked, and it looks like they don't offer medical coverage (except for elderly folks on medicaid). Thanks anyway!

They used to...but it's been more than 10 years since I worked with them. Sorry for the bad lead!

Hi all,

Something i've been wondering: how good are schools about providing some kind of coverage for their employees? Do most do it?

Yes, most of them do. I love the doctors and health care. Socialized health care saved my life and it is one of the main reasons that I will never return to the States.
