I know that women have to be covered up and dress conservatively but I was wondering are women allowed to wear pants? I ask because they keep referring to long skirts. |

If you plan to wear pants in the Emirates, I would suggest that you wear long tunic tops with them - with 3/4 or long sleeves. We keep referring to long skirts because this is the most comfortable thing to wear in the extreme heat. I personally couldn't even tolerate pants/slacks/trousers in the Gulf.... not in the heat and humidity.
You didn't mention where in the Emirates and who you are working for... the answer to both those questions affects the answer. It wouldn't for me, as I would still keep to very conservative dress.

Has ADEC stipulated what you should wear? If they say skirts, then they mean skirts not pants. |

One could have a no trousers/pants rule at work, but one could still wear them socially.

sunshine21, I thought you were talking about what to wear to work. If not then yes of course you can wear pants, shorts, no sleeves etc. |

Speaking of pants, I've just realized that NONE of my pants (except for jeans) are extreme-heat appropriate...
Any suggestion(s) for male pants that won't kill (literally) your chances of being a parent? |

Jeans are definitely NOT heat appropriate. I found them only wearable for about three months of the year. You will have a very short commute and your work environment will be well air conditioned, so any of your lighter weight fabric pants are probably fine. Then if you still find the heat a problem, I'm sure that one of the tailors can point you in the right direction for fabric nearby. Not to mention the local malls for ready-made...
If you are truly concerned, you could venture to a local fabric shop here in the US and have them suggest some high quality, wrinkle resistant, lighter weight fabric and take enough with you for a tailor to whip out a few pair for you once you get to the UAE.
For casual wear, khakis are great. My only complaint with them is that they tend to wrinkle so badly.

Follow VS' suggestion. Bring the material with you and have it made up at the tailors using a pair you enjoy wearing! |

Tailors, what a quaint idea... I like it!
As it stands, I'm truly in trouble in the nether half of my body. Khakis were never my thing, but I guess when in Rome & all that. At least I have enough thin shirts to spare. |

My husband swears by his Carharts- they're good because they're stiff and don't stick to your legs.
I have worn jeans in very hot weather before, so I wouldn't rule them out, but then, very hot to me has been 37c not the 50c you can get in Abu Dhabi.
Try linen pants--even though they wrinkle terribly. I still love mine. They even come in "jeans" cut sometimes. |

At first, I was surprised to hear that folks had their "own tailors", but now I have my own cobbler and coffee grinder, too; some folks have their own jeweller and carpet man. |
