What is the best island to work- and live on with two little kids (I'm thinking of opportunities and safety)?
What would be the travel reqs for Americans? |

This question is a bit vague thereby making a precise answer somewhat difficult. The Caribbean is a vast area with numerous islands where people speak a variety of national languages.
If you are an ESL teacher looking for a job in your field, you can rule out the Anglophone Caribbean where English is the official language. French is spoken in places like Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Martin. These places might be of some interest to you. Dutch is also spoken in parts of St. Martin as well as in Aruba. You probably fully realize that Spanish is the official language of countries like Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, etc.
What constitutes the "best" island will depend a lot on your priorities and preferences. You mentioned opportunities and safety. If you can teach subjects other than ESL, your best bet would probably be Bermuda or the Virgin Islands. Salaries there are higher than in the rest of the Caribbean and you and your children should be quite safe. Of course, no country in the world is completely safe.
If you do get a job in a Caribbean country, you should make sure to visit as many of the other islands as possible. The climate is fantastic and the people are just wonderful. |
