Moving out of an apartment that we control (first one was a nova apt) for the first time. Just wondering if people had any tips.

I guess I have to give the gas and electric companies a call and tell them our move out date? Will they come by on that day and give us a final bill?

Anything else I should be concerned about? I guess I'll have to stop by the bank and get them to update my address.

water bill
phone bill and change of address

Update your alien card within 2 weeks.
Update your health insurance card.
Update your address that you may have registered in your foreign embassy/consulate in case of emergencies.

Clean the heck out of your place and take pictures before you leave. You should be able to get back most of your deposit.

Ooh update health insurance addres-I never thought of that one. GOing to have to research it to see how that works.

We have a bunch of electronics that we need to get rid of-some working and some not. What's the deal with that truck that comes around once a week with the female voice talking about "terebi, air con, DVD pureya, etc"? If I flag them will they take all of our electronic crap? Or is there some sort of fee involved or something?

Oh and what's the best way to dispose of old carpet? I've been cutting it up into foot wide lengths and then rolling it up and tossing it into bags. Will the garbage guys accept that?

What electronics do you want to dispose of? If they still work, why not just give/sell them to a secondhand shop? Otherwise, things like TVs and air conditioners need a special fee for recycling.

Put the carpet out with the burnable garbage, since it fits in bags, but possibly better not to put a whole lot of carpet-filled bags out at once. Do them one or two at a time, if you have a lot of them. My husband did the same when he was helping a friend renovate.

Seconded on the pictures. Take a video if possible and have your manager or whoever holds your deposit inspect it WHILE YOU ARE THERE. I did none of the above when I left my first apartment and the new teacher, who can only be described with lots of asterisks, accused me of breaking a small piece of glass in an internal door (despite previously telling me he had hit it with his suitcase). My boss at the time, whom I didn't see eye to eye with, took the teacher's side. I paid half, which, considering there was no evidence either way I thought was fair, but it wasn't good enough. I ended up having my mail 'withheld' by the new teacher when I wouldn't pay up.

In addition, the school hadn't kept an inventory so accused me of stealing 30,000 yen's worth of kitchen stuff based on some vague comments passed on by the previous school's owner who also had a pretty bad track record with his staff, including me during the nine months he was owner of that school while I worked there. I got out of that because of the lack of an inventory, but it didn't win me any friends among people who had quite a lot of contacts in the city.

All of it is stuff I don't like to dredge up now because of the bitterness I still feel three years on, but cover your back as best you can, just in case.
