In general I order books from amazon.co.jp. It's easy and you can pay at Lawson or Family Mart (so you don't need a credit card). The selection is obviously quite good as well.
When I want to go around and actually see a book though I generally head to Junkudo (I'm in Osaka btw, although I'd assume the same applies to Tokyo). IME a bigger Junkudo has more books than Kinokuniya (at least in Osaka). |

Hello All,
Good Day Books in Ebisu has a good selection of new/used books at a reasonable price. They also have used Japanese books. Tower Records has newer fiction novels but you will pay out the wazou, I ended up selling mine to Good Day anyway. Kinokuniya has boring penguin classics-blaa!

Depends on which branch you go to. I was recently at the branch gambatte mentioned, and it is an oustanding source for Japanese language and EFL texts. The entire 5th floor is devoted to English language books and magazines, along with a smaller selection of other foreign language books. It is the best I have seen in Japan, so far, and the 5th floor alone would be a very respectable bookstore if it was transplanted back to the states.
Basically, I think the the larger branches of any of the big chains in major cities should be a good bet on finding Japanese language learning materials, but even the small Yakajima by my house in the suburbs has some stuff. |

I second gambateBBB's recommendation- the Kinokuniya next to Takashimaya Times Square in Shinjuku. Many of their Japanese textbooks are not available on Amazon and their range of books goes far, far beyond Penguin Classics, although for novels etc. Amazon.co.jp is cheaper.
There is also a Kinokuniya near the Shinjuku East exit but not nearly as good as the Takashimaya one. |

Tower Records in Shibuya (7F, I think?!) has tons of foreign books and a HUGE selection of Japanese study materials and books. I've never seen such a huge selection  |
