I have been in Tama for a week and have made a couple work friends, but they are all in relationships with other people here so my social network is very limited right now. I want to go to a baseball game lone ranger and wanted to know what others think about that in japan. I think it is a safe place, but i have already been pick pocketed on the bus from the airport on my first day. I am planning on going to a swallows game on saturday if that changes anything. please let me know your thoughts if this is safe or not.

There is just as much/little risk going to a baseball game alone as in doing anything else alone.

It's not as if there is any particular increased danger in attending a sporting event alone. In fact you would probably be safer sitting in the stadium that all alone in your apartment. If that makes you feel any better. Wink

Wow, that was unlucky Shocked I think you can assume that it was someone who was targeting foreign visitors and not something that happens often here. I have managed to live here 11 years without anything like that happening- I have even had my wallet returned to me on a couple of occasions when I left it somewhere, all contents intact.

Yes, you will be perfectly safe at a baseball game by yourself here. People are noisy, but it's all very...controlled, and very much a family thing as well.

I think you'lll be okay there but here's the advice....

Japan is a safe country (Japanese say its a "safety country" LOL! Laughing ) But you shoudl probably do it this way... if you think somehting isn't safe back home then dont do it in Japan either. It takes some time to figure out places and even though in Japan people sometimes go into McaDonalds and save a table with like their wallet or mobile phone Shocked Confused it doenst look safe to me so I dont do it. Wink

I think the baseball game will be okay but remember that here everyone stands up and starts singing and kind of dancing and chanting throught the whole game. Lots of fun but you may be a bit confused Confused

I like baseball and I've never been to watch the Swallows but I went to watch the Tigers and people say the Koshien stadium is a bit rough but I didn't mind I think the Swallows game will be perfectly safe. Have fun Little Peaches!!! Very Happy

Cool

thanks for the advice everyone!!! i'm excited to go and nervou...but i want to go so i'm gonna....( at home i'm the social butterfly that doesn't do anything on her own....so it's a huge stepping stone for me!!)

annnd FYI it was my itouch that was stolen out of my pocket!!! it was the whole 30 minutes that i wasn't listening to it that it got stolen!!!! it was a very expensive lesson...but i definately am more aware of my surroundings now

Do i need to buy tickets ahead of time or do you think i can buy them there?

Yeah, me too, done the whole back track through the previous nights bars to find where it went, only to find it put behind a counter without a yen missing... you were really unlucky that's for sure. People do the most ridiculous things here (cars left running outside while going to the supermarket etc) which you could never do back home. A high school student whispered to me the other day, 'Is it true they steal wallets in other countries?' so its obviously not something that happens much!

so desu ne? Confused

I dont know but here near the Tigers stadium you shoudl usually buy tickets first because they are so popluar especailly if they are playing the Giants who are the biggest team in the whole country Twisted Evil If the Swallows are playing the Giants then maybe the tickets are harder to get I dont know though about the regular times maybe you should ask Swallows fans if you can find one Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

That's more a case of the high school student being naive and not being aware of what goes on in his/her own country. While pickpocketing/bag snatching is less common here than in other countries, it is far from non-existent. A guy was arrested in Chiba recently and found to have snatched around 120 bags from women. I have friends who were pickpocketed in Shibuya or on the Yamanote line, and there has recently been an increase in bag snatching from bicycle baskets in Tokyo.

Little Peaches was unlucky to have something stolen right after arriving, and if you leave your wallet in a cafe etc. you are quite likely to get it back, but Japan is not so pristine that bag-snatching and pickpocketing don't exist at all, far from it.

Yeah, this was my opinion, despite the student being part of the so-called 'international' class. My answer was something like, 'er, it happens in Tokyo, don't you know.' Rolling Eyes

Yes, some people are naive in Japan, but then again what do I know Cool .

Things happen, the spate of drug related robberies in Roppongi is a hot issue recently.

What day is the game and who are the Swallows playing?

If the game is on a weekday and the Swallows are NOT playing the Giants, Tigers, or Dragons (maybe), then you should be able to walk up before the game to get tickets--possibly not sold out.

Or...buy your ticket in advance from a Loppi machine at a Lawson's convenience store. It'll be in Japanese, so if your reading isn't up to scratch get someone to help you.

Jingu Stadium is a nice place to take in a game. I hope you like it. Check out what the Yakult fans do after they score a run. Quite unusual and very fun!

Regards,
