Hi
I am a 'senior qualified' teacher, and was wondering how to go about applying to universities.........what do they like to hear about, do i need a photo attached, formal covering letter etc?
should i mention i want accom as well? are salaries negotiable?
i'm trying to apply from overseas before going to hk, so any hints would be appreciated.
thanks
machi

Hi Machi

I've found a cover letter and a full CV usually does the trick. It's always advisable to modify each cover letter to address the key areas of the of advertisement. The CVs I've sent in are usually 5 pages long and include a personal detail, qualification, work experience and referee section. I've never included a photo, but that is based on personal preference.

I wouldn't enquire about accom or specific position related questions until the interview phase. Salaries are definitely negotiable, however some universities (or departments) are more inclined to go down this path than others. From personal experience, I would say that salaries are only negotiable if the uni initially made an offer that was lower than the norm ... or the norm 5 or 6 years ago. For example, an MA/MEd with around 8-10 years of university experience, should net you around 40K per month with full medical, gratuity and a minimum two year contract - flights may or may not be included. An accom allowance typically kicks in at the Associate Prof or perhaps Assist Prof level at some institutions. To be employed at this level, you would need a minimum of a PhD, substantial research publications and a great deal of university undergraduate and post-graduate experience.

Regarding applying to positions from overseas, the 'Education' section of the South China Morning Post would still seem your best bet:

Good luck with the process
