Has anyone noticed that the so-called "memory hooks" for non-Turkish speakers trying to learn Turkish aren't really effective? I am starting to learn Turkish in preparation for living there, God willing, and while I speak, read and write 5 languages now, they are ALL Eurolanguages, so the roots are quite similar and therefore its somewhat easy to learn them.

Thank God the Turkish language did away with the Arabic script, and we can now learn it easier with our own alphabet. Here are some confusing things in Turkish, and has anyone any good way of memorizing the subtleties?:

karşı -- opposite, contrary, opposed, against
karşı karşıya -- face to face
karşılayıcı -- a welcomer
karşılamak -- to greet, meet, welcome
karşılama -- a greeting, meeting, welcoming
karşılaşmak -- to meet one another
karşılaşma -- a sporting event
karşılaştırmak -- to compare
karşılaştırma -- a comparison
karşılaştırmalı -- comparative

..........see what I mean? Where can we hook our memories?

Dear eclectic,

Turkish is an affix language. Usually using suffixes to change meanings.

"karsi" being the root word has any number of suffixes that can be added to it.

and you have to remember the infix rule in negatives

karsilasdik karsilasmadik

the vowel also changes in the negative depending on the last vowel in the previous suffix or root word:

Geldik Gelmedik

confused yet?

lets just say that once you have a fairly decent vocabulary of about 100 verbs, nouns, adjectives etc. you should start learning how these infixes and suffixes change a meaning of a word.

If I could just reach my utility belt Batman, I might be able to understand suffixes.

Eğer Sadece Yeni kuşak Batman ulaşabilir, ben sonekleri anlamak mmkn olabilir.

Hey, I think your lesson worked!

It has nothing to do with memorization or any particular feature of the Turkish language, all languages have roots, primitive words and derivated words... just think about opposite, opposition, oppose, opposing, opponent... every new language is a new challenge, actually in comparison to many other languages (not to English, tough:) Turkish can even be considered an easy language, it has a certain set of rules and almost no exceptions to them, you just have to get used to the rules.
Good luck!

Bence Ebenezerin dediği doğru. Tkcede kk kelimeler var ve bu hafıza zaman ile gelir. Ama yinede her gn bir iki kelime oğrenmeden zarar yokdur. Sonekler zaman ile beyin ine yerleşir.
