Britons most likely to be arrested in United Arab Emirates, Foreign Office figures show

Britons are more likely to be arrested in the United Arab Emirates than any other country, official figures show.

The Gulf states tough stance on drugs, alcohol and indecency mean that more holidaymakers and expats are detained there than in more popular destinations such as France or Greece.

In the past year an unmarried British couple, Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors, were sentenced to three months in jail for having drunken sex on a beach in Dubai.

An English mother, Marnie Pearce, also spent three months behind bars in the Arab state after being convicted of adultery.

The Foreign Office warns travellers that they could face more severe punishments abroad for behaving badly than they would at home.

Chris Bryant, the Foreign Office minister, said: Researching the local laws and customs before you travel could avoid time in a foreign jail.

Brits were recently held accountable for the disturbance surrounding the re-election of Iran's Ahmedinejad too. Maybe it's just all the bad ones who find their way to the M.E.

And that accusation was like... so believable... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I found that idea an insult to Iranians. Laughing

Dear NCTBA,

"What happened to the Ugly 'Merican?"

I came back to 'Merica, so I could be handsome again (I'm ugly only when I'm abroad - no pun intended.)
Regards,
John

I've pointed this out before, but if you read the full story, you will find that Marnie Pearce was arrested because Mr. Pearce went to the UAE police and denounced her.

Faced with an aggrieved husband insisting that they enforce the law, the UAE police had little choice but to intervene.

It's not as if they are setting up "morality patrols."

Thanks VS!

Mr Pearce will eventually get his just deserts, I'd say, especially when he gets back home and has to deal with real justice. Cowardly action on his part, really. No doubt that's why Mrs Pearce went looking for a real man Rolling Eyes

"Brits were held accountable"?? No doubt this was merely a sloppily constructed sentence. Nobody in his/her right mind actually believes any statement that comes out of the Ahneminejad government.

But, in case you do, fear not, for the fearless Iranian leader has promised to prosecute the protesters "mercilessly."

He's so warm and fuzzy I feel like baking him some brownies.
