What are the costs for a mobile phone in Istanbul? I'm trying to decide if it would be cheaper to get one her eint he US or just wait until I arrive in Istanbul.
I have serached the forum but have not found an answer.... |

Wait until you arrive. US phones are usually locked to a particular carrier and not compatible with GSM.
There are hundreds of mobile phone shops. The prices are from very cheap to very expensive. Most of these shops also sell second hand phones.
You'll then choose between three carriers. Turkcell, Vodafone, and Avea. Turkcell is the most widely used. You buy the sim card (minimal cost) then buy kontor cards for credits.
When do you arrive? do you have a job lined up? |

I have a job lined up and arrive in about 3 weeks... Was going for a job in Saudi but the only contract affered was a bitscanty and I had an iffy feeling about it...

If you do bring a phone from the states that isn't locked to one GSM carrier you can use it here provided you register it at Turkcell if you buy a Turkcell line. They require your passport for this and charge 10 TL.
