|
|
I'm contracted with a University for a year (which started last semester). I completed the first semester and recently decided that I can't return. Not sure why I made that decision...probably being bullied by my bosses in that special Chinese way, missing my family, etc.
I made a GIGANTIC mistake (which i didn't realize until searching these forums on "running) by telling the school ahead of time. Basically I felt it would be decent to give them some time to find a fill-in or whatever.
Obviously they weren't very happy and the problem is that my flight wont be for at least a week (I'm flying to my home country and won't be coming back to China any time soon) and now I'm reading (on this site and others) that the school has the ability to contact the PSB about my unfullfilled contract and that the PSB has the ability to stop me from leaving the country.
holy lord.
So i guess my question is whether or not this is true. Also..if it's true is it like standard operating procedure for the school to contact the PSB regarding runners? Or is it something that is an extreme action that is only done from time to time?
Basically I want to know what the realistic chances are of me being stopped at the airport by officials. Other than walking away from this contract, I havn't broken any laws or anything.
Should I seriously be considering ditching the flight and jumping on a ferry out of the country tomorrow? I don't think I would be able to afford it anyway, but I imagine its better than being stuck in China.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Oddly, i choose my screen name well before this incident : /
Thanks Forum. |

Well Dude,
You never tell a school you are running. Since, you have you need to play if off and say that you will stay then run like hell after payday. Also, Psb blacklists are only good for the provience you were blacklisted from. So, leave and if you want to come back to China just go to another provience. I hate to say this but, I am something of an expert on this. Just ask around the forum. |

Aren't you the same guy that about six months ago was ranting about how bad China was and how you were about to escape and go to Laos where supposedly it would be paradise? And are you the same guy now posting on the Turkey branch about going there for a job? |

Who, me? Nope...you must have me mistaken with someone else.
Thanks for the responses so far.
There's basically no way they'd believe that I'm coming back. So from what I see so far they do have the ability to contact the PSB and keep me from leaving the country. Is this something they're actually likely to do to collect the "breach of contract" money?
On the bright side they just found out on Saturday...so Im hoping i can find a flight out of China on Monday morning and escape this...but who knows.
Anyone else have any input?
thx again. |

if you plan on leaving then leave ASAP. Surely a ferry to from China to xxx isn't that expensive. Or changing your flight date.
hopefully you learn from mistakes made. |

Pretty sure that the PSB won't be waiting for at the airport - they have far more important stuff to do than go after contract breaking FT's - like playing solitaire on the computer.
If you don't want to face the school just pack your bags - book into a hotel - and then go take that flight youve already booked!!!!!!
The PSB will not come looking for you - don't panic. Remember if there are any legal complications involved with contract braking and a visa - then these mostly arise during the process of finding a new job and trying to get the paper-work done for that employment.
As for leaving - well the school is responsible for you while in China, they hardly want that responsibility to last during the lengthy period any legal process would take getting contractual penalty money out of you. They will just cut their losses and say - good riddance.
As I said - just pack your bags and get into a hotel dont worry about the form you fill in with passport number etc (I think they use them as toilet paper) and then just meet your booked flight. |

instead of "midnight run" they should just call it "the leisurely taxi ride to the airport in mid-afternoon." has anyone ever actually fled at midnight? |

What you talking about J - its always like the car-chase in Bullet - with the principal screaching after your getaway 3 wheeler pedicab in his black Santana - with a following main lynching mob made up of the security gaurds - who are 4 up on a single electric bike, that's being peddled, 'cause its run out of juice!!!!!!!!!
It usual ends in a burnt corpse being hung up on a lampost just outside the main school gates - and about 2 nonths go by before the local cops, finaly finish their computer solitaire and take a look |

I am on the same boat my friend. I was so fed up with my school treating me like sh*t, so I up and quit...yesterday! I am breaching my contract for not giving the proper ten weeks notice, but they breached the contract in so many other ways I just couldnt take it anymore. I certainly wasn't expecting to teach 50 hours a week (I kid you not), six days a week, with only one 20 minute break for lunch each day. Now that I quit they are threatening me with, "you will have to pay the consequences of your actions" and "actions will be taken and damages will be sought". Does anyone know how much these "damages" will cost me? I'm ready to 'run' as well, but does it have to be tonight? It's just not that easy for me to take off and run so soon. Will the PSB really be after me if I decide to hang out in the city for another week? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks |

You don't say whether or not you've approached anyone at your school about these serious breaches of contract. Did you? and if so, what did they say or do? did they pile all this extra work on you all at once, or was it a little bit at a time? you are working legally in China, right (Z visa)?
anyway, the first step is to try to resolve the conflict at the lowest level possible - talk to your FAO at the school. If no satisfactory resolution is reached, then take it to the next level of admin - usually the local authorities that deal with foreigners.
If you're set on leaving and all bridges are already burnt, then just gather your stuff together, and leave before they try take any kind of action against you (more threats, blocking your exit etc etc).
Don't get off that boat before reaching shore... |

Out of curiosity, is this the same job in Shenzhen that is paying you $15,000 USD? |

The other day, whilst strolling down Peoples road, picking up a couple of Zhujiangs and making a beeline for Martyrs square, I was thinking of this issue of contracts....
Back home, who really does sign contacts, as far as work?
Recording artists sign contracts....
So do professional athletes....
Do people making 400 euros a month sign contracts?
I have friends back home that teach....Theyve never signed a contract...
Do the locals working here sign contracts? Actually, I dont know...
Maybe it is a cultural difference...The Chinese do seem to be a letter of the law society, and the proprietors of said schools here, of course, have the FT's best interests at heart, so it must be for our own good... |
