|
|
hello all,
i'm interested in teaching in japan. i am celta certified.
should i apply to chain schools or private schools?
(not interested in the JET program as i actually WANT to teach)
will having a CELTA even help me odds at getting hired
at a place like AEON/ECC/GEOS/Etc? or are place like that
only looking for the salesperson personality?
please give me your feedback as to how to proceed......
p.s. don't tell me to "go to korea" yea, i like korea a lot,
but i've been studying japanese for a while and want to put it to use.
even if the job market is tighter there. |

From what I've heard, the market is saturated in Japan. BUt you might try posting ont he Japan forum, people there should be able to give you some solid advice. |

After Nova closing up, and the economic downturn, I'd think there are a lot more teachers competing for jobs in Japan. |

Apply to chains; they'll organise your visa for you and you can always jump ship once you're in Japan.
Aeon generally better regarded by their teachers than are EEC or GEOS by theirs, or at least there seem to be less complaints about them and at least they subsidise apartment rents (and you have to take the apartment, but almost all AEON teachers seem to consider them a good deal). Also, there appears to be marginally less sales pressure at Aeon, although much depends on the individual branch.
However all eikaiwa chains expect you to teach using their method and you might well have more freedom to teach properly at a mom and pop schhol or at a smaller chain, and some JET teachers are allowed to teach properly and given loads of responsibility, it just depends (and their pay is much better).
JET only hire from country of origin, but Aeon, and i think GEOS, only hire (in effect) from interviews in English speaking lands, so you may be out of luck anyway if you're currently in Korea. |
