Why on earth do you need to carry a marriage certificate around with you?

SJ its actually been recommended to me too by a mullah. once a woman was arrested from Australia hanging out in a coffee shop with her Greek husband. only the MC got her out of the jam. Sad though it is.

One problem with this idea is I wonder how many of the mutawwa where you will be teaching can read English.

I should think it would be more likely to come up if you were not an obvious "racial" match. Evil or Very Mad Anything that can draw attention to the two of you...

Also, be aware that the 'mutawwa' are not law enforcement officials and have no right to demand to see any of your documents. They often get around this by being accompanied by policemen who can of course ask to see your igama and/or marriage cert. This cert has to be issued by the Saudi authorities and is written in Arabic. A cert from your home country will not do.

Being accompanied by a policeman became a requirement in 1991 or so. For a couple of years the muttaween found they had to obey the rules of civilized behaviour, at least with expats with possible wasta, because the policemen were just young lads who had joined the police for a salary, pension and a quiet life. However, they then got around it by being able to choose the policemen who accompanied them, who suddenly all turned out to have a long beard and the same kind of stare as one of the chosen.

The muttaween are of course no respecters of the law. I've been chased down the motorway by a GMC full of them, I know a Saudi friend who got arrested, detained, beaten up and had his wallet emptied, and there is the famous case where they tried to invade a compound full of nurses and the security guard called the police.

The good thing is that apart from the Najd you are unlikely to be much bothered by them. It must be nearly five years since I've even seen one.

I will tell you what my wife and I do.

We carry around the original marriage certificate stamped by the Saudi Embassy in the country of marriage and Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country of marriage.

But that is not enough, as you need an Arabic translation.

So we also carry an Arabic translation which has been stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in KSA. It is sufficient to carry only the attested translation.

BTW, you will have to go through this procedure when you are hired directly and get Iqamas, so might as well get it done now.

Lizzie, I never met a married couple that found any need to carry a marriage certificate arond in daily life in KSA. Now, if you are going to travel a lot in Saudi Arabia and stay in hotels, you might need a copy of it.

I lived in the "liberal" Eastern Province, so that could have something to do with it, but I think it would be completely unnecessary to go to the trouble and expense to have it translated into Arabic.

It costs SR. 75-100 per page here. Get it translated here. The translation office I used is across the street from the US Consulate in Jeddah. They can be found in all cities.

P.S. If you are both of the same skin color and ethnicity, then it is highly unlikely that you will be asked to produce one on the streets by the religious guardians.

SJ makes good use of the bold function. He was trying to tell me something.

I am currently engaged to an Arab, in fact a young lady from Khobar. I am a white guy. Do the police (not the mutawwa, but the police) also stop and interrogate interracial couples?
