Considering lots of places right now. But as for Taiwan, what should I be looking for? I am 42, 12 years experience in Japan. BA and CELTA.
I really want to enjoy myself. Do you think that Taiwan is a good place for this. I mean considering my age. How friendly are the locals? I am not a 21 year old clubber. But neither am I a monk. Good beer, women and song is all I seek.
I am not looking to save, more have a good time and vacation time is a big plus. |

Your age is against you for the majority of private language school jobs in Taiwan.
Parents at these schools are accustomed to seeing (and subsequently expect) to see teachers in their 20's & 30's. Schools will therefore find it hard to see you fitting in with the demographic. I'd like to stress that it is the PARENTS that drive this situation, and not the schools.
My advice is that you focus on emplyment in Hsin Chu (North West Taiwan) which is a major blue chip business area. Students there (mainly adults looking for career or business English) have the opposite expectation to the paragraph I wrote above. They expect their teachers to be in their 40's and 50's and have a business or academic background.
There are no fixed rules though and I am sure you could find employment in all other areas of Taiwan. At least you now know what you are up against.
Most schools offer unpaid vacation. 3 weeks of unpaid vacation (including national hoidays) is normal and 1 month is considered very good. |
