After reading a previous post on this school (after I had wasted my time filling out an employment questionnaire) I was not surprised to receive an offer of employment which was a duplicate of the one Jasonworth posted. I would have been very suspicious of a request for 810 Euros anyway (!), but the post on this website confirmed it.

Here is the reply I sent to their offer, and their response to me:

Me:
This is a scam. No reputable school would ask for money upfront. Do not contact me again.

Them:
It does appear you are having a misconception about the mode of employment in Spain. Permit me to inform you that most schools here even charge application fees for prospective applicants.

What we charged you is accommodation, for your comfortable residence, and is in no way a scam therefore it is my humble wish to advise you to change such strong language or the school authority will be forced to hand over your statement to the legal team to examine for any defamation or derogatory remarks from you and legal action taken.

Best Regards, XXXX

Unbelievable! They're the scam, and they're threatening ME with legal action! But with their best regards.

Hi all,

A friend of mine asked me to investigate the Umpire International School for him as he suspected it was a scam. I have lived in Valencia or many years and have never come across the name before so .... here goes:

THIS IS A COMPLETE SCAM

1) The street given in the address exists but number 13 would be on the empty plot between the Town Halls Social Services department and the Asociacion de Gitanos (Gypsy peoples Association. The school, obviously does not exist and the photographs which peopl have been sent are of places I have been unable to identify in the city of Valencia.

2) There is no record of Umpire Internation(al) School in the Education Department of the Valencian regional government.

3) The "contract" with was sent to my friend is NOT a legal Spanish work contract. In fact is is so full of garbage that it is almost laughable were it not such a serious matter.

4) As people have pointed out, either the school HAS accomodation or it doesnt. If it has, it is presumably furnished already.

5) Secret love affairs with the student are not acceptable, but what about open ones? (Only joking!)

6) The information about work permit and visa requirements is completely incorrect. If you are not a European Union Citizen, the school would have to do all the paperwork for you before they could employ you. If you are an EU citizen you have a right to work and live anywhere within the EU and dont need a visa or a work permit, just the necessary qualifications.

In short, I took my findings to the local police who agreed to take copies of everything I had found out. But, as my friend had not paid any money, no crime had been committed so they were not really very interested.

This sort of thing makes me Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
