I am going to marry my Chinese girlfriend and am thinking of moving to China. I'm teaching in Korea now. I'd like to get a University job, but I understand that these jobs don't pay a great deal. Is it legal for me to teach private lessons on the side?

Ask your new employer - when or if you have found one.

In Shenzhen last year I was able to charge 200 RMB per Hr or 400 for a 2 1/2 hours a week but sz is a very wealthy city compared to most of China. I have friends who worked in outer districts that charged around 100 an hr.

150 per hour with a minimum of 2 hours sounds about right.

My contract says no outside work so of course it's often the office workers here who call and offer me the part-time work.

Is teaching outside your contract as bad as it is in Korea? Or is it manageable in China?

I've never heard of anyone getting fired for it here except for around the time that the Olympics were being held...

It is illegal ... what else matters ?

You'll break the law if you know you won't get punished ?

Getting WRITTEN permission from your employer bypasses the law

How can permission from an non govermental agency ... bypass the law. The RP is dependent on working for an org that has the ability to provide the worker with the necessary papers...that org doent have the authority to allow the FT to work for any other company.... that being said, I have heard that in many provences, it is not considered to be a violation to work in a private home tutoring...this would be up to the local authorities to suss......

Check the web ... because the SAFEA contract and the visa (law) allows for work beyond the original employer providing that the employer gives written permission to do so.

If true it would be a great resource.. thanks for bringing it to my attention.. could you provide a reference to the visa law that states that ..as up til now the goverment offices I have dealt with have come from the a place where they feels the law does not allow for addtional non goverment regulated work...the SAFEA contract does allows for additonal work...but SAFEA is not a branch of the Central Government. It isnt even a regulatory agency...rather it provides guidelines and no provence is obligated to follow then...

Then by-all-means consider the use of "contract law" as the answer you seek
