I have to do a demo tomorrow for an English school. The demo will be with a webcam and microphone. I have received the class materials. Will the person listening to my demo actually respond to my demo questions and conversation? Or do I just leave a silence between questions to pretend students are answering? This is my first demo. Thanks. If you have any other tips or advice for demos, please feel free to let me know.

Also, what should I wear for the demo? I was thinking of wearing a dress shirt and a tie. Do you guys think that is too formal for an online demo? Thanks again.

I'd shave and wear a nice shirt, but forget the tie. I don't think you should put pressure on yourself for this so-called "demo". It's really not a demo unless you're working with actual students. It sounds more like an interview where the school gets to see what you look and sound like, and how you present the material. I'd approach it more like a one-one-one, on-line tutoring job and give or explain the lesson (warmer, presentation, practice, production) to the person interviewing me. Don't forget to be friendly and outgoing, smile and have a sense of humor, that sort of thing.

Be careful with the humor though! What you think is funny (or sarcastic) may not be for the Chinese!

I would not bother the offer at all. My experience in China tells me that Chinese managers or educators have quite different expactations from English teachers. Don't sell yourself short!

Cheers and beers to any necessary demo classes observed by solely western academics that know not only the language better .. Smile

Doing demos is unavoidable for many positions. Not everyone has the luxury of working for this western scholastic types...
