Hi,
I hope I'm not asking for info that's been on this forum many times before, but it seems to me that there are sparse jobs in Africa that are advertised on the net. Should this lead me to assume that there are very few English teaching jobs in Africa? Or does it mean that opportunities can only be found by being there in person? I'm talking about paid positions rather than volunteer positions. And, of course, Africa is a massive continent so I'm thinking particularly about Central, and West Africa. Any info you can provide would be appreciated! |

Perhaps you could start here: http://www.britishcouncil.org/africa-where-we-are-in-africa.htm (some of these may only be offices, but some may be schools, too) and here http://www.britishcouncil.org/teacherrecruitment-apply-now.htm (though there aren't any vacancies (bar Tunis) at the moment).
Angola is definitely one to keep an eye on: it's BOOMING! There is ESL work, but how to get it is another question. Google would be one place to start. I hear that multi-national oil companies are opening their own training facilities in Luanda and Cabinda. However, many of the employees still want the perk of being sent abroad to study English.
There are international schools all over. I recently heard of someone going to Addis Ababa, but Ethiopia may not interest you as it's on the east coast.
Cape Town (South Africa) definitely has the most to offer and draws students from all over the world. There are several language schools - some very good ones and your typical fly-by-night fare, too. However, you'll need a work permit or a study permit. Language schools there won't assist you in getting these, unfortunately, as there are many experienced and qualified local ESL teachers. Expect to earn about $1200/month max if you're lucky enough to get a permanent position and then there may even be some benefits (annual bonus and subsidised medical). It's not a good salary for Cape Town, you probably won't be able to buy a car or save, but you will have the opportunity to live in one of the coolest cities in the world. |

Try the following; British Council, Wood Group North Sea for Equatorial Guinea or Marathon Oil and VSO. |
