Dear All
Please share your experiences when you were late in joining your work in KSA. What were the implications?
I might be late in arriving in KSA (the semester would have started already by the time I reach the Uni.). I am wondering what are the implications and how things will work for me? |

Dear Chaudhry,
One rather important issue that probably will be affected by a late arrival would be the End of Service bonus (EOS.)
This is half a month's salary for the first FULL two years of service (paid, as far as I'm aware only at the end of the second year), and, after that a month's salary for every additional year.
So, if you arrive late and stay for, say, two years, it likely won't be counted as a full two years, which would mean no EOS.
Regards,
John |

It's actually quite common - because of visa difficulties, last-minute hiring etc - for teachers to arrive after the semester has already started. It shouldn't be a problem except for the issue John mentions. I'd imagine it would be up to the individual employer as to how strict they want to be regarding what is a full year of service: for example, I arrived a few weeks late for one job, but was paid the full end of year bonus regardless. Other employers might not be so generous, however.

Not all employers pay a full month's salary after the first two years. Some do so after five years. |

As per the Saudi Labor Law:
Half monthly salary per year for first 5 years
Full monthly salary per year starting the 6th year |

I will also be late arriving in KSA as it's been a full 2 weeks for me. According to Saudi Cultural Center the Embassy is "backed up" with other applications which further delays the process plus Ramadan. I wouldn't be surprised if most of us heading there would be starting in October. |

By Saudi standards, two weeks late is on time! |

KFUPM claim you haven't fulfilled your contract if you don't work the full two years, so you don't get the ESB. Not the standard interpretation but worth remembering. |

I think it's one-half month's salary for each completed year 1-5, then one month's salary for each completed year beginning with year 6. |

Dear Middle East Beast,
I believe you're right about this:
" . . .then one month's salary for each completed year beginning with year 6."
but does this mean a person leaving after one year would get 1/2 a month's salary ESB?
"I think it's one-half month's salary for each completed year 1-5 . . . ."
I'm pretty sure that if you're there for only one year, you don't get any ESB.
But maybe that differs from employer to employer.
Regards,
John |

Dear John,
If you have a one-year contract, then you get the one-half month's salary if you complete the year.
I'm not sure what happens if you have a multi-year contract and complete, say, 13 months of it, i.e. whether you get the Saudi service award for the first year. I don't think so, but I'm not sure. |

Dear Middle East Beast,
It didn't work that way at the IPA (where ALL the contracts were for one year, renewable ((or not)) every year.) You had to be there for at least two years before you got the (then one month) ESB.
But, as I said, maybe it's different for other employers.
Regards,
John |

Hi Chaudhry,
Today I went to the UofH and was told that teachers are supposed to join their departments on September 26th, students will only join their class. on October 15th. So may be coming early in October will not be considered very late! |

If you join late you will not get the ESB at the end of the first contract. Your vacation pay will be pro-rated.
The reason for your late arrival is IRRELEVANT.
Welcome ! |
