Hi.

I've lived in Korea for the last 4 years, pretty much, and want to start applying for jobs in Saudi Arabia soon (I leave Korea next month).

Just wondering how common you feel it is for Saudi employers to request a Korean (or country X, Y or Z) criminal record check when an applicant has lived there for a long time.

Thanks.

Hi Spinoza, so you are leaving Korea? Why the Kingdom?

I'm afraid I can't answer your question about the criminal record check- it seems far too logical a move for the Kingdom, except they have moved to an Oracle data-base system for immigration, and they are capable of anything. Google Oracle- lots of fascistic possibilities. Add their services to a police state, and anything unsavory is possible.

There are other more user friendly countries in the ME, who pay well and won't require you to give up all of your rights, dignity, and fun habits. And most people seasoned in Korea have some fun habits that won't be tolerated in the "tragic Kingdom".

I speak for only my case which took place one year ago:

I was in Korea and Taiwan prior to my arrival to KSA. I applied for a visa in my home country and they (KSA embassy) wanted a police check from my hometown police station (I had not lived in that town for 12 years). In reality, I don't think they even cared which town my police check was from, as long as it was from a town in my home country.

By the way, my employer told me to leave to Taiwan to apply for the visa in my home country.

Firstly, many embassies - such as the one in London - do not require you to submit a police record at all. Secondly, although I'm not certain I think that those embassies who do require this record will only need it from Korea if you are actually applying for the visa there. If, say, you are a US citizen who applies in the US, they will only want a police record from the US.

Thanks, everyone. So far, it doesn't sound as though I need to waste my time getting a CRC in Korea. Of course, I could just get one just in case it comes in handy, but I'm rather lazy. Mr. Green

The money's okay, and I want an Arabian/Islam experience. Saudi is preferred, but not essential. I'll look at many options and go with whatever's best. But I find Saudi more intrinsically interesting than others.

I see!

I remember, when I was looking at JET in Japan, they wanted CRC's from every country you've ever lived in. Just wondered if the same was common in Saudi.

Really? If an experience living in a Muslim country is your goal. This is absolutely the last country I would choose.

For a more realistic experience living within the culture, I would choose North Africa or the Levant or perhaps Oman. For the money, I'd choose the UAE.

Do you need to get a police report from your own city or the county you live in?

Hi,

Same question in the OP applies (if you happen to know the answer)

Hi,

Are you asking about police checks? I never provided any such thing to the countries where I worked: Oman, UAE, Kuwait

They do a security check, but no one seems to know how far it ranges. So, it might catch if you had been in prison for the last 15 years, but not if you got in a bar fight 20 years ago.

The one country that you didn't name (because you never lived there) was saudi arabia. saudi does, but only after 9/11 (kinda like their laughable practice of rolling a mirror under foreigner's cars and checking under the hoods as if WE were the danger! Laughing ). A kinda tit-for-tat response to the tightened U.S. security regualtions. They never had it before, altho due to the nature of my employment, I did hafta undergo a security check from the 'Merican side.

My guess is the the OP is refering to saudi...

Yes, but Mr Spinoza was quoting my comment on the UAE, so I suspect that is what he was asking about.

I do believe that the OP already had his answer on Saudi.

As others on this thread have so eloquently stated, you can achieve both of your listed goals without having to go to Saudi Arabia (e.g. the UAE). Why is the KSA more intrinsically interesting?

Have you searched other threads for others' experiences in Saudi Arabia?

Dear Middle East Beast,

Perhaps he's an ex-Marine - they're notoriously masochistic (when they're not being sadistic, that is.)
